And if you flash a standard un modded version of DD-WRT after, it will brick your router so don't do it!
DD-WRT for NETGEAR WGR614L Installation Guide
Categories: Setup / Configuration DD-WRT
It's great to see the official release of DD-WRT for the NETGEAR WGR614L. The firmware can be downloaded from this page. Below are the steps to install this firmware to the NETGEAR WGR614L.
Installing DD-WRT From a Serial Console to the WGR614L
- Run minicom/hyper terminal from a Linux/Windows machine. Configure the baud rate and the device properly and connect the serial console to your PC.
- Connect your PC to the LAN port of 614L with a straight cable and assign a IP in the '192.168.1' subnet (I am assuming that the default router IP is 192.168.1.1).
- Press ctrl+C and reboot the router. Router will now give you the CFE prompt.
- From the CFE prompt run the TFTP server bu running 'tftpd' command.
- Upload the 'chk' image downloaded from 'myopenrouter' using the following command -
'tftp -m binary 192.168.1.1 -c put dd-wrt.v24-9281_mor_NEWD_SF_mini.chk' - Now the image will be written to the router flash and will be rebooted automatically after successful write.
Congratulations, your DD-WRT firmware is now ready to use! Now, if you don't have a serial console, here's how to install the firmware from the default NETGEAR software.
Installing DD-WRT to the WGR614L From Default NETGEAR Firmware
1. Go to the 'Router Upgrade' page of the NETGEAR Configuration UI.
2. Browse the 'chk' image downloaded from MyOpenRouter and click 'Upload'.
3. Now it will give a warning – "All Internet connections will be lost." Press the OK button.

4. It will give another warning, since the DD-WRT firmware version does not match with the existing version. Ignore this warning and press the 'Yes” button.
Now the router should start uploading the DD-WRT firmware.

Now, wait until the image is flashed. Your DD-WRT firmware is up and ready to use!

So I'm assuming you guys have updated your v.8 to this dd-wrt? So how is it so far? I'm afraid to flash my v.8 as of now.
I've got 4mb of flash on my WGR-614L yet I'm forced to run the mini version of the DD-WRT firmware. I'm running DD-WRT v24-sp1 (08/08/08) mini. Why isn't the standard build of DD-WRT available in chk format? Why won't Netgear make it available? I've got to say I'm rather disappointed.
I have downloaded what purports to be the standard build in chk format, but it will not load and I don't want to brick my unit. There seems to be no clear and concise set of instructions on anything related to this unit, despite the fact that Netgear has this site aimed specifically at it.
