Recover Your WGR614L Using a Serial Console & Windows

So, you've "bricked" your WGR614L, either through too much tinkering or just a fluke. You may have tried tftp through your network cable, you just can't get a ping or for any reason can't get it going again. Rather than panic, you can access your router by using a serial console!

For all interested, I made a cable for this using a clone nokia DKU-5 Cable, total cost of parts £5 or around $2/$3 if anyone is interested, I can take pics. It works perfectly!!!!

So I recently bricked my router. I've fixed it with the serial console before, but I can't get it to work for the life of me this time... Setting PuTTY to 115200 just results in gibberish. I've tried basically every standard speed there is, and I can't get anything other than gibberish.

Did I break it for good this time?

if you manage to get ctrl+c during boot to work, you might get lucky.

Not looking like I'm gonna get lucky tonight... *sigh* I liked this router, too...

Aha! Looks like I had a loose connection or something. Got the Netgear FW loaded on, but now it's not recognizing any of the networking hardware...

Any chance of getting a copy of someone's NVRAM(Edited to remove passwords, of course.)?

I followed this guide to try to unbrick my WGR614v8, I used an adapter from here, http://www.moderndevice.com/products/usb-bub and the console came up perfectly. But the problem I'm having now is that the TFTPD server fails to start.

CFE> tftpd
Start TFTP server
Reading :: Failed.: Error

I also don't get the et0: or Device etho: lines which makes me thing something is really wrong.
Anyone have any tips or words of wisdom?

Ouch, sounds like you ended up with the same problem I did. I never did get it working again completely after that. I got the wired side working after a bunch of NVRAM editing(I don't remember everything I changed, I just went through everything and started filling in MAC addresses and various other stuff that I thought might affect it.), but I never got the wireless side to come up again. Gave up after a while, so it's sitting on my desk waiting for a day of boredom to attempt fixing it again.

No idea what caused it, either.

I got it!!!!!!!!!

I did a reset while the console was connected, hold the button long enough that the last line is Committing NVRAM, as soon as you release the button hit ctrl-c in the console to stop the booting, start the tftpd server and then you can continue with the guide.

Now to try DDWRT again and maybe it will work lol.

Not that it's likely to still be relevant, but Sparkfun carries a cable like the original one pointed to in the article.
