What version of Tomato is this based on?  Are there any changes of note from the base tomato firmware?  When upgrades come out, is there a version of the tomato firmware that will work out of the box with this router (Eg. perhaps those for the linksys WRT54GL?) or must we wait for you guys to modify and release?

Thanks for this router, totally happy so far :)

I'm wondering the same things. Version 1.11 of Tomato is from late 2007, there have been quire a few changes since then.

I'm all for rolling up my sleeves and bricking my router with v1.19 though. :-)

Yeah, 1.11 is pretty old, (now that I see that 1.11 refers to the tomato version). I'd really like to know when to expect an upgrade to this!

Further, I can't seem to get wireless security to work. Either the wireless network doesn't come up, or it comes up unsecured even though I have security enabled. What gives?

Yeah, I had serious wireless problems with this firmware and my two WGR614v8s. I never could connect to the wireless network and the SSID would stop broadcasting when I enabled security.

I also never succeeded at getting the wireless bridge or client modes to connect to my belkin router (with or without WPA security).

I wouldn't recommend using this firmware for production, but I'm sure the tomato/WGR614L situation will improve.

I had similar problems with my windows laptop (oddly enough, my mac laptop and PS3 worked ok). I have to use WEP encryption, which is weak, but good enough I guess.

My laptop that wouldn't connect runs Vista Business. I tried to configuring the router in several security modes (Open, WPA, WPA2, and WEP), but the laptop never connected.

I had two WGR614v8s running this firmware. I couldn't configure them as AP/Bridge, WDS, or AP/Wireless Client. The routers just never could connect to each other.

To be honest, it was pretty frustrating. I wish I would have stuck with an older, tried and true router. :(

Anyone try a newer version of Tomato with success?

I wish I knew how. It is quite dissatisfying using an ancient version of tomato on an "open source" router, and also dissatisfying not getting a response as to when to expect this situation to be rectified, an issue I asked about exactly two months ago...

Well, I gave up on using custom firmwares (tomato and dd-wrt) for this router for now. Luckily the latest netgear firmware supports WDS (called base station and repeater in the GUI). Its working really well bridging vista home premium to my xbox 360. It can't steam HD, but I didn't really expect wireless G to be able to. It works great and is reliable with standard def.

The only problem with the netgear WDS is that I'm not sure it would play nice with other routers (I have two WGR614Ls), but I'm very pleased with its performance for now. Good luck all.

I just installed Tomato Firmware for WGR614L v1.11.041510 on the WGR614L I just brought home today, about 5 minutes after powering it up, and now I get nothing. It seemed to fail to upload; it went through most of the upgrade progress bar, but then it reported that it "timed out" so I tried to reset the thing to reinstall the default firmware. Now I cannot connect by any means. What can I do now?

You'll have to tftp the default firmware to the router.  If you are using windows use these directions to install tftp:   http://www.simplehelp.net/2008/09/10/how-to-install-a-tftp-client-in-windows-vista/  After you have it installed go to start> run cmd and type ping 192.168.1.1 or whatever your router ip address is.  If you get a ping you're good to go. Use dos commands and navigate to the folder where you have the default firmware .chk file store. then type  tftp -i 192.168.1.1 (or whatever your routers ip is, its normally 192.168.1.1 if it is in tftp listen mode) put defaultfirmware.chk (replace defaultfirmware with the file name)

Hit enter and wait it will tell you if it was successful and if it is then your router will reboot.  Wait until the power light is still.  Try to access the router through the browser if it still doesn't work press the hard reset on the back and it should work for you.
