Hi

I have tried to compile the source code from Netgear but with no luck. Do I need to have some special tools to compile it? I have installed Bison and Flex because I got some errors about these two tools were missing. I'm using SUSE 10.3 and I have used the instructions in the source code manual from Netgear.

Yeah, I'm not impressed with the instructions.

I haven't been able to get a compile yet myself.  I'll try again this weekend and see what I can find.  My guess is that maybe something is missing and the directions are from a more complete, but older version?  But I'm not sure.  I'm using Mandriva now, and I had to install Bison and Flex as well.  I have OpenSuSE at work, but haven't had any time to do anything there.

I did find the other firmware, that leads me to believe the guy who created it got it to compile.  But I suppose it's possible he just found a way to expand and mount the image, tweaked it (all he did was disable the DNS proxy), and recompressed it?

If I can get it to work somehow, I'll let you know how.

The router is now (with the other firmware) working well for me, but I want to do two things.  Enable ssh (or telnet even, but I'd prefer ssh) and enable logging (redirected to an internal syslog server).

Also, for an "open-source" router, I was disappointed that I couldn't use firefox to set it up.  I read it required IE, although I was able to set it up with Konqueror.  I can't believe they didn't test with firefox.

Oh well.  The best solution would be for someone to port OpenWRT to it, but I know that's beyond me.  I'll keep trying to get a good compile tho.

I've been doing some testing, and I'm getting this type of error alot in the "make dep" step:

"warning: bits/types.h: No such file or directory"

All of them point at files not being found in the "bits" directory.

Those files appear to be in the  linux-2.4.x/include/asm-mips or linux-2.4.x/include/asm-mipsnommu directories. (and some others)

I might try linking or copying them to see what happens.

OK, I got it to compile!  I found a patch and some info on the netgear boards.

I have a run.bix file.  I haven't tried it yet, but I have one.

I'll let you know if it works and what I did later.

Well, not so good so far.

I couldn't get it to take the firmware from the web interface.

I was able to get it to take using tftp, but...  It didn't work too well.

The LAN lights were wrong.  They were all on (only 2 devices plugged in), and the colors weren't right.

(First 2 were green, last were orange, or something like that.  I forget.  I should have written it down. :-)

The LAN did work however.  I could browse, go through the setup pages, etc.

The wireless didn't work.  It came up disabled, and I could never enable it.  (The admin page would let me toggle it on, but it never came on, and I could never connect to it.

Worse, when I flashed back, I was having wireless trouble.  Even though I'm sure all my settings seemed right.

I chose the "default all settings" option to get it back.  But now I'm back and working.  I'll take a look at it more later.

The lights on the LAN being wrong bugged me.  That should be the Netgear part of the driver coming from Netgear???

I wish they'd release the code they used to get the firmware working, because the stuff I can download isn't it.  Not without patches and stuff anyway.
