When I purcahsed the wgr614l i thought that it would be the next wave in routers.  I thought there would be alot of people that would jump on the bandwagon of a open source router that actually wanted various open source firmwares on it.  It really saddens me that this did not happen.  I really thought that the open source community would be all over this with updates, but that never happened.   This router should of never come out with such a lag of support. dd-wrt firmware has had 1 update that is complex to update if you already have put dd-wrt on it. tomato latest supported version is a version from november? 07. Openwrt was supposed to come on board and add support, but that never happened.  It really saddens me. (specially that i wasted money on 2 bricked routers).  I know that im not a linux guru and i dont have a serial cable to bring routers back to life, but you shouldnt have to tfpt routers and have a serial cord just to update the router to a newer firmware. I comment alot of people on there help with this router like nachi and SouvikGhosh for there help with everything.  Sad to see the nothing really ever came about with this router.Thanks and sorry about the ramble.

I also have to non-working wgr614l routers if anyone wants them. Im sure you can use a serial cable to bring them back to life.  Id just ask for shipping.

Hello Damani -

Thanks for posting to the forum and letting us know how you feel and sharing your experiences.  I wanted to let you know of a few recent additions to the site that might help you.

First of all, there is a new version of DD-WRT that was uploaded in late August.  This release reportedly fixes many of the issues present in the previous build.  You can check it out and download it by clicking here.

Also, a new utility has been uploaded, called the "MTD Erase" utility.  This utility is intended to help you switch/upgrade firmwares on the WGR614L without the need for a serial cable.  I'm hoping that this utility will help you out.  You can download it here.

Also, Nachi and SouvikGhosh, who work directly with and submitted these downloads, are active on these forums.  Please post your experiences and I'm hoping that they can help you also.

No i understand that, and i went through those steps in doing that. But if u already have dd-wrt installed you have to go through all those steps, when it should be a simple upgrade through the gui interface.

I understand what you are saying. I too didn't realize that once I put on DD-WRT that I couldn't easily upgrade with my browser. I don't blame netgear cause they don't make the DD-WRT stuff but if I had know so before hand I might have done something different. But heck, maybe I just didn't research it enough. :)

I hate to see people throw away good money so if I can help you I would be glad to. For instance if no one else here can help I would be glad to let you send me the routers and I will try to unbrick or upgrade. (no gurantees) and send them back to you.

If you are dead set on just getting rid of them altogether I might take them off your hands. You can PM me if interested in any of this.

My apologies that your WGR614Ls remains bricked and we couldn't help. I also want to thank Brandon for his offer of unlocking the routers.

Just wanted to let all know that we are aware of the upgrade issues and we are working on this. Souvik has already given a procedure to do this - but I am sure that needs some improvement from your experience.

We also like to get more information about the bricking - and would like to know what was the steps that lead to bricking the router.

The community is still growing and we need more help to provide better support. We are either actively working with the developers of other open source firmwares so that WGR614L router is better supported by those firmwares, and we are slowly getting there.
