Thanks for the info. I now have the standard firmware on my router, DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/14/08) std SVN revision 10509M NEWD Eko). I can not, however, seem to get it to flash from the DD-WRT firmware upgrade screen. I've tried and it appears to load just fine. But when the router resets itself, it always has the same firmware it started with. This means I'm stuck waiting for chk builds. Any advice?
Hi all, Eko has fixed most of the issues like led blinking, resetting in his new firmware. This firmware is avilable in the DD-WRT svn - version number is 10488. Please try this version. This was a test build but no one has complained against this formware. It's working quit fine. Try that out and share your comments.
chk images are available too... hover the mouse over files and you'll find them.
Hi everyone
Im a newcomer to the scene. Ive been lurking these threads for the last couple of days. After research and homework, i finally purchased the WGR614L. I must say im very impress with the performance thus far and hopefully it stays that way. Everything went smooth with the flash. One question about this one here:
" dd-wrt.v24-10509_WGR614v8-L_mini.bin " What exactly does it do ? Anyhow great site.

Please note that svn10564 has also been released but only contains bin image so if you are planning to upgrade from already installed dd-wrt firmware you can download the 10564 version. But if you need the chk image download 10509 version. Good Luck...
I have never been able to successfully flash my unit with a bin image. The DD-WRT firmware upgrade link from the web interface never works. I've tried different browsers, etc. It looks like it works but it takes far too short a time and only succeeds in rebooting the existing firmware. I've got it working with a chk image (the one listed above). As long as I'm setting it up I thought I'd be better off with a newer build.
Any suggestions on how to flash with a bin image?
About .bin upgrade: It doesn't work with dd-wrt GUI because of checksum that is checked by cfe on reboot. This fails, then router goes into tftp mode to get you chance to load .chk file.
This is only problem with WW (EU) router, NA should take bin.
That's why I do both .bin and .chk images:
Example:
dd-wrt.v24-10600_WGR614v8-L_nokaid.bin
dd-wrt.v24-10600_NEWD_nokaid_wgr614v8-L.chk
Yes, build 10600 is available. :)
It wasn't a good idea to try this version tonight (svn10564).
After the upgrade by the gui ....nothing!
With Tftp32 and a chk image 10509 i'm back with you.
I think it's a big problem to resolve. Another one is that on the dd wrt site there is no comment about the different versions, fix bug etc. It's not easy to find your version between eko or tng directories.

build 10600 works fine with my EU router thanks a lot for the information.

i use the dd-wrt.v24-10600_NEWD_std_small_wgr614v8-L.chk what's the difference with the nokaid version please?

I am in the US. I purchased it in the US and it has a US power cord. I've tried numerous times and it will not take a .bin image.
Xyzzy said: Any advice as to how to get a standard build of DD-WRT working on my router? I've tried many, MANY times. It never works. It is VERY frustrating. The only builds that work are mini builds. I'm not a newbie when it comes to this. It seems to me that something is clearly wrong. I just can't figure out what that something is...
I think I've figured out what caused most of the problems I was experiencing. After further testing it seems that dd-wrt and the Mozilla Firefox web browser do not play well together when attempting to upgrade. Using Internet Exploder, it worked fine. I hope this post helps others to avoid the frustration I experienced.
FWIW, I'm now running DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/24/08) std (SVN revision 10600M NEWD Eko)
SouvikGhosh said:achilles said:you need to checkout the code from dd-wrt svn. Simply you can type the following command from your linux console to get the code. command: svn co svn://svn.dd-wrt.com/DD-WRT. Pleasse be sure that you have enough disk space - the total source will be around 7 gb. You can specify the version also while checking out. Please refer to the svn man page for details.SouvikGhosh said: Hi all, Eko has fixed most of the issues like led blinking, resetting in his new firmware. Please provide me a link as this svn stuff is quite confusing for me and I am not able to get the exact source code. Thanks in advance
Hi ,
As per your mail I tried to download the svn version no. 10488 but I was not able to do this due to lack of disk space.
But my free diskspace is 13gb and according to your mail , it should take only 7gb.
Could you plz tell me why is this happening ?
I gave the following command to get the sorce code :
svn co svn://svn.dd-wrt.com/DD-WRT --revision 10488
I think this is all I need to do but I dont know exactly how much free space I need to have for this ???
Plz help ...
Brett said:Xyzzy said: Try some more ... it worked for me! I found that at some point when it was just sitting there it started to flash, at which point I could tftp ... If you can ping it it's NOT a brick.I tried again... and unfortunately no luck again. The only time I can get the light to flash is when I let go of the reset button after holding it on for about 30 sec while it's powering up, but the light only flickers once and it's before it initializes connections on the ethernet ports. While I may be able to ping it, I can't find any way to start tftp on it so I can flash the firmware.
I have encountered the same problem. I had the 10509 std small version running, and then tried to use the web page to upgrade to a new 10700 standard small .bin file.
I Cannot get any other version into my 814 now it via tftp. I have been tftping every way I can think of, and still all I have is an answer to 192.168.1.1 with a TTL of 100, and no other appearent life. Any other tricks to try, or is there a serial cable in my immediate future?
TAR
When I was having issues, I went ahead and connected the serial cable to it and was easily able to restore it using that.

Brett,
Thanks for the quick reply. This is what I get for upgrading on Sunday Morning. I have a TTL-Serial adapter headed this way, and should be able to get back in business soon.
Eko, I seem to have a NA version of a WGR614L that didn't like a .bin upgrade from 10509 to 10700. After I get the serial cable running, I will update the results.

After sitting there looking like a brick the power light on the unit should start blinking, indicating it is ready for a tftp upload.

The router had been previously taken from stock netgear software to dd-wrt.v24-10509_NEWD_std_small_wgr614v8-L.chk software, and was humming along nicely. I used the web interface to upload dd-wrt.v24-10700_WGR614v8-L_std_small.bin.
I can't say I totally bricked it, because the Power light is green, and the checkmark is yellow. The unit answers a ping at 192.168.1.1 and has that somewhat odd TTL=100. When I run through the 30-30-30 reset, I get a momentary blink of the power light, and then it just sits there. I have waited for about an hour, and it hasn't gone to a state where it will receive a tftp upload. I am angling for the entirely new category of "Semi-bricked."
TAR
That sounds like the same exact experience I went through... and I'm agreeing with the "semi-bricked" category ;)
Brett said: That sounds like the same exact experience I went through... and I'm agreeing with the "semi-bricked" category ;)Try just holding in the reset button for a bit. I found that after doing so it gets into tftp mode. When/if the power light blinks you can then tftp to it.

Count me in with the "semi-bricked" variety.
I flashed my NA version using the ".bin" via the web interface last week (before reading this second page - and the note about (not) using Firefox) and have the same symptoms...
Can ping 192.168.1.1 successfully (with the same TTL 100) and that's about it. I'm switching to a different router for now, but hope to bring this one back to life in the future. It would be a nice if an unbricking method which doesn't require the serial cable were found, but that might be asking too much.
My hope is to figure that out. With any luck, the serial cable will help reveal what state things are in, and help us identify an alternate method of recovering things to an operational state.
At the rate things are going, my new WGR614L will be here before my serial cable is. I ordered a TTL to RS-232 (I'm old school) converter and a backup WGR614L Sunday. Just got confirmation that the router will be here Wednesday from Amazon.
I will keep everyone posted on where things stand.

New build svn 10776 is available for download. Only mini is available as wgr614v8-L.chk file, then you can use GUI to upgrade to other WGR614v8-L builds.
Major fixes:
- GUI upgrade works now
- jffs is fixed
Eko,
Thanks! I appreciate your help. This is why I went with the platform and DD-WRT for software.
My spare 814 will be arriving before my serial console, so I will report back this evening.
(By the way, what is that in your picture?)
Tim
The 10776 is running very well in AP, Repeater, Repeater Bridge, and Client Bridge modes.
Both the VINT and NEWD builds....I test...micro+, mini, nokaid, std, and mini_USB.

I got my backup WGR614 and went through the upgrade process as follows:
Out of the box, my new WGR614L had the current Factory V8 Software. I put 10509 STD Small on my WGR614L to get back to where my semi-bricked unit was.
I then used the command Eko recommended in the "How to switch firmwares..." article:
erase linux
reboot
After the reboot, I held in the reset button until the power started blinking, and then used tftp to push SVN 10776 mini into the router.
My Serial port board came in last evening. I am going to solder it in today and I will report results this evening.
Tim
It seems like Multi SSID isn't working correctly with 10509 std.. After using the connection a day I can't either access the open chillispot nor the AESCCMP private network. My German thread is here.
