Hi, I today tested my brand new WGR614-L and I have managed to immediately brick it. I was a bit disappointed with the functionality in the factory firmware, so I downloaded a dd-wrt package dd-wrt-mor.v24-9281.zip and uploaded dd-wrt.v24-9281_mor_NEWD_SF_mini.chk through the firmware upgrade gui, which according to the readme.txt is the one for upgrading from Netgear firmare.

Now, the router just sits there with the test led blinking, which according to the manual mean that the firmware is corrupt and the box is in tftp mode. I have tried to connect via tftp, I am not sure whether it is actually possible. I have read elsewhere, that the WGR614-L can only be unbricked via serial console. I dearly hope that this is not entirely true as the whole procere involdes brazing and other things i am not good at.

However, my attempts to try whether tftp actually works got as far as opening a tftp connection to the router, which produced no output, i.e. no error message. I wonder whether that means it worked or not. However, I am lost here, I want to restore the official firmware, but I have no idea where to find it. Netgear seems to offer no downloads, and the download section here is something I have my difficulties understanding.

Sorry if my questions sound dump, I really do not want to make stupid mistakes at this point....

Thanks a lot in advance for any hints...

replying to myself: I still was able to restore the official firmware through tftp, as I had not yet pulled the plug after the failed upgrade and tftpd obviously worked on the router. However, it looks like switching to dd-wrt is not as trivial as just uploading the *.chk file...

after flashing with DD-WRT u need to do a hard factory reset ..

yes, but I expected the router to make a full reboot and come up again. If the router drops into tftp mode, I feared that doing a hard reset would make things even worse, given the warnings that a hard reset might brick the router to a point where it cannot be unbricked without a serial console:

While I am a long-time GNU/Linux user (Debian GNU/Linux since Potato) I definitely suck at things like soldering, so I would like to avoid it if possible.

In fact, later on I made another try with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/14/08) mini
(SVN revision 11205M NEWD Eko), not the MOR package I tried before. I did a 30-30-30 reset /before/ flashing, but none none after, given the warnings in the comments to http://www.myopenrouter.com/article/10339/DD-WRT-for-NETGEAR-WGR614L-Installa...

And - voilá - it works, without the second 30-30-30, and as long as I am not certain, that a 30-30-30 reset won't brick my router, I would like to avoid it...

OK .... If it z working 4 u with the steps u have taken it's OK ...

Cuming to the first point ..the issue was caused by board number whose support was not there in DD-WRT code and thus used to loop while checking for correct board number ....

I m not sure if your board also has such a no. .... then it z better to avoid this .....
