A year ago I installed DD-WRT on a router I got from myopenrouter as a prize. Its a WGR614v8. How can I reinstall the old firmware that came with it?

You can get the original firmware here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8320

Then, use DD-WRT's upgrade tool to load it. Don't forget to do the 30-30-30 reset after loading the firmware (do NOT do the 30-30-30 reset BEFORE you remove DD-WRT)

(30-30-30 = hold down reset button for 30 seconds, then unplug power while holding reset for another 30 seconds, then put power back in while holding down reset for another 30 seconds. this erases and resets all nvram.)

I treid loading the firmware but DD-WRT says the firmware is a unsupported file.

Oh yuck. It won't load the .chk file? I'm not sure how to fix that. Perhaps DD-WRT requires a firmare in .bin format instead. I hope someone else can confirm or deny that.

Yes you are right .. DD-WRT does expects a bin file for f/w upgrading ... so one needs a .bin version of Netgear f/w or any other f/w to do an upgrade ....
However a fix for this problem has also been released at :

http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/12619/CHK-Upgrade-Patch-For-DD-WRT-GUI/
http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/12568/DD-WRT-build-svn-revision-12357M/

But if someone has already installed a DD-WRT build without this fix then he will need a bin file for f/w upgrade ...

Do you have serial console set up ? In that case you can upload original firmware from console.
Otherwise achilles, can you provide us the latest dd-wrt firmware in bin format so that xavierp94 can upgrade his router with new dd-wrt firmware.

The article http://www.myopenrouter.com/article/10496/How-To-Switch-Firmwares-on-the-NETG... and its comments has some information that looks helpful.

I read somewhere about converting between chk and bin files, but I can't remember where. I think the difference is just in the file headers.

Has anyone else used that method? Seems to risky because I already have bricked a router before and I dont want to do it again.

yep ... I have used this method several times and it's OK .....
But make sure that from next time if you flash a DD-WRT image , use the image which has support for chk upgrading so that you will not have to use this lengthy process again .....
