Dear forum,

I have a Netgear WGR614L, their "open source router". A while ago I flashed this router to the DD-WRT firmware.

Yesterday I tried flashing from DD-WRT to Tomato 1.25; and I nearly bricked my router. Had to do a TFTP upload during boot to restore it.

Money is a bit tight right now; I really don't want to brick my router. At the same time I'd really like to change firmware as my router is not completely stable right now, it sometimes locks up and needs to be power cycled to work again.

I assume the reason I nearly bricked my router is that Netgear 614L's native format isn't the standard .BIN format -- it is a .CHK and as I understand it is slightly different. And now that it has DD-WRT, I really don't know how to flash it to Tomato in a safe way.

I thought about going back to stock Netgear firmware, but I can't seem to find it... On Netgear's site there are no downloads for the 614L.

Can anyone here provide me with a bulletproof, known-to-work method for flashing the 614L from DD-WRT to Tomato ?

Thank you. :-)

I had (i think) the same problem.

I actually bricked because of DD-WRT. When I installed it, it was fine, but I followed the 30-30-30 instructions to reset the NVRAM on it, and that bricked it. I bought an installed a serial cable, and when I looked at it using puTTY, I saw that it had gotten stuck in a reboot loop. Using puTTY, I enabled TFTPD in the router, and pushed the stock netgear firmware into the the router directly. I then did a full 30-30-30 reset with the netgear firmware in place, and it was clean as new.

Next, I pushed the tomato 1.25 firmware into the router using the stock firmware's upgrade page. Here's where it gets weird.

The stock firmware's default login in "admin" and pw "password". Tomato's default login is "root" and pw "admin". However, after you push the tomato firmware into the router, before you reset it, you can log into the admin page with "root" or "admin" pw "password" since the nvram still had the stock password stored.

From there, I told it to reset the NVRam to default router settings, but DO NOT tell it to do the "Erase all data in NVRAM" (doing so seems to screw up the DHCP client in the router for some people, and kills wireless for me.)

That's how I did it.

Trimble Epic, thank you for your answer.

A few (simple) questions:

1) Where did you find the stock Netgear software? www.netgear.com -> Support -> Downloads -> ... -> WGR614L does not list any firmware downloads. Neither does www.myopenrouter.com -> Downloads-> WGR614L Resources ?

2) The Tomato firmware, it's the one from this URL, right? http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/12368/Tomato-1.25-Firmware/

3) This situation about not being able to"Erase all data in NVRAM" ; is this a permanent problem? Can I assume that I can erase all, and then set up Tomato from scratch, and everything will work again? If not, then Tomato doesn't seem reliable on the WGR614L.. :-(

1) I downloaded the stock firmware while it was still there. I made sure I had a copy of it before I started flashing anything else to it.

send me a private message with your email address and I'll see if I can just send you a copy of the stock firmware.

2) Yeah, that's the revision of 1.25 that I'm using. Tathagata Das fixes some issues with the original 1.25 post. I still can't use WPA security though.

3) Yeah, the problem seems permanent. However, a) it doesn't seem to be a problem for everyone and b) reset to defaults is enough to fully reset all the settings. You don't NEED to clear ALL nvram.

The Netgear stock firmware for the wgr614L is available at www.netgear.com -> support -> wgr614v8 including the older firmware versions. Note the "v8".

I'm just curious what your problems were with dd-wrt. What build did you use? I've had mine running for 50 days unti a power outage. With old firmwares the chillispot died every two weeks but it runs well with current builds. 1 private SSID with WPA2 CCMP and the open chillispot. I'm running DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/10/09) std
(SVN revision 13064)
and it seems like the wireless connection is more stable now.

@Schugy:

I was on DD-WRT pre-SP2 build 12533 Mini, the first build I noticed and installed after they fixed the miw0rm.com security vulnerability.

Right now I'm on pre-SP2 13064 Micro, because I had to just install something simple when the router was bricked.

I wanted to use Tomato because it has a reputation for being stable. If that's not working out for me soon'ish, then I'll probably flash to DD-WRT 13064 Mini, and let DD-WRT reboot every night. This solution has been O.K. for me before -- I might still see the router hang occasionally, but it was rare.

On a side note: If someone has a good tip for getting the 614L rock stable under high load, then I'm very interested. It has never worked really well with many connections on a fiber for me. I'd like to buy the new 3500L, but money is a bit short right now. If I could just get the 614L rock-stable, that would be great... :-)

We do have a link to NETGEAR original firmware for the WGR614L, it can be found here:

http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/10175/WGR614L-Original-NETGEAR-Firmware/

I noted that we had an old version, I updated it to the newest version from NETGEAR's site. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

This might be of assistance to you also:
