I can't inform u about 2.6 kernel ... but as far as wireless drivers are concerned they r not open ...we only get binaries ....

Hi,
I am interested in using one of the open Netgear routers for a research project here at the university. I've read some documents here at the website but there are still three questions that weren't answered so far.
Is there a support for a recent 2.6.x kernel? I've only read about 2.4.20 kernel but this cannot be real - this kernel version was released in November 2002 - it's SEVEN YEARS old!
Is the driver for the wireless chip also open source or just a binary module? I'd require to obtain some extra information out of the driver so an open source variant would be very beneficial.
Does the router support QoS in terms of 802.11e or WME?
Best Regards,
Ingo
The problem indeed *has* been drivers for the wireless radios (Broadcom primarily, since they are the provider of choice). The only solid drivers (non-bleeding-edge/development) for the Broadcom 47xx series (which includes most Netgear and Linksys N and G wireless routers) are the dreaded *monolithic binaries* (which will only work with a 2.4-series kernel, hence the brcm-2.4 series of DD-WRT and OpenWRT releases). There are *bleeding edge* (prerelease/snapshot) builds of OpenWRT (specifically 8.09.1 Kamikaze based on Linux 2.6.25 kernel) which can indeed be gotten to work (I use this version with my WRT54GS). The issue even here is that, except for the older Linksys G routers, there is only a generic .trx file available for upgrading.
