Hi. I have 2 pcs, one runs Windows XP the other Windows 98SE (yes, I know it's old, but my husband loves it, insists it is more secure since hackers/spammers don't even support it anymore, etc). Currently we have a cable isp and plug one of the pcs at a time directly into the modem.

I plan to buy a router to get them both on line at the same time and I plan on adding a laptop in the near future as well.  Question is if I buy a wireless N router, will I be able to actually plug the pcs into the router with a cable (even though the router is "wireless")?  Will the 2 pcs still need a wireless N adapter?  Will the router even work when all the machines are on different operating systems? Can you recommend a good router that will work in this instance?  Is there anything I need to think about that I haven't mentioned?

I would really appreciate any help you can provide.  Thanks in advance.

I recommend you to buy Netgear WNR3500L. There along with Wireless interface, you will find Ethernet interfaces to which you can connect your PCs by Ethernet cables. So it is not mandatory that you need to have wireless N adapter. If you wish then you may not use wireless.
Again this router is 802.11g compatible. Hence if you have 11g adapter then also you will be able to connect to the router.
There is no dependency on the Operating System installed in remote machines.
Above facts are almost true for every router available in the market.

Hope all your queries are clarified. Let me know if you have further any queries.

Hi!
Thank you for your reply.

I have another question for the router we do own.
It's a Linksysy BEFSR41. It is not wireless.
We have Comcast for the ISP.
When we hook up the 2 PCs to the router, we don't get the internet.
The router lights are on so it hasn't shorted. A Comcast guy hooked it up, and it worked for an hr, and then didn't work. We can't get it to work at all.
We follow all the procedures in the correct order.

We don't understand.

Have you viewed this before?
Does it have anything to do with the combo of Comcast and Linksys?

Also, in regards to the G router, isn't an N router faster with a laptop? Or,
can you not tell the difference?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry, I do not have any Linksys router and also I did not face such problem. If it is working for an hour and then stops, there must be some problem with the connection. Ask your compact guy to configure it properly.
Sometime scheduler in router are on and that may stop the connection which is very unusual. Again I do not have that router, so can not make any comment on that. Better if you ask this on their forum.
