You need to revert to the factory firmware.
You can use this technique; http://www.myopenrouter.com/article/16099/How-To-Reflash-Factory-Firmware-on-...
Then flash with Tomato.
I have downloaded tomato and when I try to install it under admin in DD-WRT, it tells me that the file type is invalid. I even renamed the tomato firmware to .bin but it tells me the firmware upgrade failed and goes back to DD-WRT. I also tried to reinstall the original firmware but had the same results.
Can anyone help?
Hey i have tested the new tomato for the RT-N16 on my wnr3500L and it runs successfull all basics also WPA/WPA2 on draftN im very happy with that.
YOu can get the modded Tomato on http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=63587 i changed only the filename to bin et voila Tomato running.
I could not acces with dhcp over Lan so ic changed to static but must set a IP in the DHCP range like : 192.168.1.136 because the range begings with 192.168.1.135
over Wlan dhcp works fine.

I am having a terrible time with the router and DD-WRT with wireless connections and want to see if a change in firmware would correct this. I flashed the router to DD-WRT before ever trying the stock firmware for comparison.
Hey mahicks3322 ,
first 1 used for 2 weeks dd-wrt had some problems with dosconnections with my netbook and problems when inactivity after 1 hr slows transfer down and now 2 days with tomato i'm happy with that all probs are gone speed is very good with dd-wrt i got in my constelation download ~ 5-6 MB and now i got 8-9 MB.
So far no problems with this beta.
How can I upgrade my WNR3500L to new Tomato for the RT-N16? Original firmware and Tomato version 1.25 needs *.chk file, but at http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/showthread.php?t=63587 is .trx file. I renamed it to .bin, but both firmwares says that only .chk is supported.
You can convert a trx file to a chk file.
They must use some tool to prepare chk file which may be different than what we use for Netgear boards. I do not know what essential information should be put in chk header for RT-N16.
For that I guess you have to ask in Asus community.

Hey I didn't upgrade from original FW to Tomato , i used DD-WRT i will ask Teddy_Bear for a *.chk edition will inform you when get some news.Sofar i have new beta 4 test will test buttons that we have complete functions on this model.
Has anyone been sucessful in running tomato on a netgear WNR3500 V2? If so, would you be able to show me which tomato firmware build worked for flashing the router?
Thanks
The V2 only has 4mb flash capacity. So any firmware under that size should work fine.
Hey ED,
I have WNR3500 V2 and I'd only hope that WNR3500L is similar
You would have to install DD-WRT first and then upload Tomato after you change the firmware extension to bin
I haven't done it myself .. I am still trying the router with the stock firmware to see if I like it
* Asus RT-N16
* Asus RT-N12 (no-USB editions)
* Netgear WNR3500L
* Netgear WNR3500v2 (no-USB editions)
* Linksys WRT160Nv3 (no-USB editions)
are the supported MIPSR2 editions
with beta10 i'm happy no crash no lags so far now will test beta11
