This sounds like a power supply defect for sure, at least based on what you are telling me. I am very sensitive to the high pitched noise you mention. In fact (off topic) my 32" LCD TV makes that noise every time I turn it on, and it stays that way for a while before fading. I almost returned it but it seems to be a normal part of its operation.
That being said, the power supply for your router shouldn't be doing that. Perhaps the replacement came from the same series from the manufacturer (I'm sure NETGEAR definitely does not make the power supplies). If all else fails, you should try returning the router to the store (even though you like it) in hopes of getting a power supply that works.

Hey everybody,
perhaps this isn't the right place to ask, but as I didn't find anything about this on google, I'm trying it here.
I just bought the 3500L (and installed DD-WRT build 13309M which works pretty god so far). But the European power adapter (P/N 332-10116-01, Model AD6610) makes an annoying noise: a very high-frequency bleeping. It's that high that I assume not everybody (esp. 'older' people) are hearing it but it's really no fun working next to that thing.
Of course I contacted Netgear Support and they sent a new power adapter at once. But sadly: the same problem with this one - so it seems to be kind of a series-problem. I told them and waiting for suggestions. Of course I could just bring it back to story but I like the router itself.
Has anyone else these problems (ask your kids if you're above 40 ;-) )?
Thanks,
Kai
Yeah, same deal here.
WNR3500L bought in Norway. Awful noises.
Not really an option to return it at this point, so I'll probably just throw some carpets over it for now.
In the long run I'll probably get a hold of a larger 12V brick and run several devices off the same unit.
Same problem here - European adapter, too, and it chirps and twitters nastily when the load increases, e.g. when a USB device is connected.
Anyway, from what I've read here, it really seems to be a series problem.
I'm using another adapter found at home, and have written to the seller.
As I'm planning to use a 2.5\" USB hard disc on the router, I'm probably going to modify one of those external 3.5\" hard disc adapters, which can deliver 12V for the router and 5V for the HD - and they're perfectly silent ;-)
I like the router, too - flashing DDWRT worked no problem.
Same problem here. European Adapter is emitting this high-frequency beeping. I only here it when i am putting my ear next to it, but my girlfriends ears are a little better. I will try to get an other one...
Same here, same P/n and model, bought in France.
Very very very annoying, even for a 37ers like me, even a 7 meters away (max length of the room).
--> The router got back in its box instead of replacing the linksys.
I'll change the power adapter or move the setup to another room when i have some spare time.
i´m haveing the same troubles with the power adapter,
first i thought that i had just bad luck and brought it back to the store where i bought it, they replaced the power adapter and same problem....
pretty annoying because i want to have my router in my sleeping room,...
i thought of replaceing it with a power adapter from electrical store, because i don´t want to give it away :P
Thank you all for answering, so it's exactly like I suspected.
The Netgear support is really good and they're trying to help as they can - in fact they sent me a new power adapter within a few days only.
I believe that not a lot of people made them change the european power adapter so perhaps you can drop them a note if you're having the noise-problem, too.
I pointed them to this post in my last mail and suggested to contact their QA.
I'll write here if there're any news.
Indeed... I had to move the Power Supply to the far end of the office...
I wish in future there are more PoE routers...
I just bought one in US, and I am hearing a high pitched noise from the router itself. The sound is the same whether connected to the wall directly or through APC UPS which regulates the power and prevents spikes.
I just wanted to give feedback here.
First of all: I'm really impressed of the good Netgear support team! They even offered me to send a new router. As I explained that this will not help if there's the same power adapter inside, they sent me an (older I think) power adapter (NETGEAR P/N 332-10040-01, Model DSA-20P-10 EU 120180) which works without any sound!
I also mailed to Netgear marketing / distribution and told them perhaps to check these adapters. They quickly responded that they didn't knew of any problems but want to check it.
All together this is really what I expected from a brand like Netgear and I'm glad I bought this router!
BTW - DD-WRT is working really great on the device.
I got my WNR3500L today, I have P/N 332-10116-01 on the power adapter.
I do not hear any noise from the adapter or the router.
35 - well below 40. My ears are good; I know the sound you refer to - one of my older Nokia charger produces that. Also, my old PC used to produce this noise under high load.
I guess it must be the same thing: a capacitor.
Hello everybody, there are good news:
I just got an e-mail from Netgear: "We're working on a new version of this power adapter (without that aggravating sound)." It will be available around april.
So that's professional, isn't it?
Csimbi you should definitely hear that sound, because a friend of mine, about 45, is able to hear it
i was just asking because its really a high frequent sound
i mailed the netgear support about my problem and they sent me a new adapter, maybe this will solve the problem
i am going to report here as soon as it arrives
@kwbolte
I hear a lot of good things about Netgear support. I guess they intend to stay in business for long, and if they keep it up, I am sure they will.
@ginchiller
I am telling you guys, I, my wife and my kid do not hear a thing.
I can only guess that the adapters you are using either shipped with some manufacturing error, or, somehow it got damaged during shipping.
Just got this router yesterday, same p/n as original poster. It gives off an unbearably high-pitched whine all the time - cant be in the same room as it.
Netgear DK/Nordic support is looking into it and will be calling me back later today.
My 3500L (from jan 2010) also produces a high pitched whine - I cant hear it from about 1m away though so not much of an issue for me :)
Just heard back from support - they dont know when they will have the new power adapters ready. Maybe end of April, or maybe not - the guys higher up the heirachy arent telling them.
damn i have same problems. I bought device today (iam from europe) and this high noise is very annoying.
Its possible to get non original power supply, that has same specs?
Tadej said: Its possible to get non original power supply, that has same specs?
Yey, that should be possible.
But as mentioned above Netgear promised to have a new power adapter ready this month - so I would wait and contact the support.
I will post here as soon as I get the new adapter.
Today i bought one over ebay. 1500mA and 12V, regulated, switchable polarity. This one should do the trick! I really cant stand noise of the original adapter.
Got update from support, cases are marked as ship-only and should be sent out "no later" than July. Seems like a long time from now.
