You need the USB firmware.
Here are a couple of options if you want to use dd-wrt
Got to database here http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database
and enter wnr3500.
Pick the 3500L and then the firmware that has USB in the filename.
You could also try Kong's version which will support USB.

Hi Everyone.
I upgrade my 3500L with this firmware: dd-wrt.v24-13972_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L, which is the latest dd-wrt firmware. The problem is that I can't find in the settings anything about the USB port. I check everything in the menu and settings but i can't find any available options for connecting usb-device. I read that this version of the firmware supports USB port.
Please give me advice what to do.
