Hi, i buy WNR3500L and install DD-WRT for WNR3500L v24 K2.6 BIG 13972 BETA (BIN) firmware. This firmware supports usb devices. I read the instruction in dd-wrt web site how to install usb device and how to use it. I see the usb stick in web gui. I also make ftp server and it's working. The problem is that my pc is Win7 and I CAN'T see the Usb device in network neighbours. I'm very dummy in linux. I read that i need to install samba on the router - i try but without success. Please explain me step-by-step what to do to see my usb stick like network storage device.

Have you seen the DD-WRT Wiki page for samba?

I read this topic and after ipkg update i got only ERROR message that some package is missing.

I haven't done it myself (and never used ipkg on DD-WRT) but perhaps you should give "Option 3: The easy way" a try. In fact there are even two possibilities in Option 3.

I read that and i can't find that this is "easy" way. When you start reading how to install HDsamba to access fat32 you can see that

"Although it is possible do not use fat32. Any question about this or that not working in conjunction with fat32 will result in the answer to use ext3. If you want to mount your USB-drive to a windows system use ext3 and one of the ext3 driver that can be found at http://www.fs-driver.org/ or http://www.ext2fsd.com/."

I explain that i didn't understand nothing from linux. I just want to plug the USB stick in the router and to see him like network device(storage).
Sounds so simple, but i need to install 10000 things.....

As samba is a Linux tool to share disk space over the network with Windows, I think you have to use a Linux file-system (as ext2 or ext3) - mainly because you want to start samba from this disk which cannot be done from FAT (afaik). You only need these drivers if you want to use the same USB disk directly on a Windows machine.

So the hardest thing you have to do is to format the USB disk or stick with ext3 with a partitioning tool or a Linux Live CD/DVD (like Knoppix --> http://www.knoppix.com/ ).
After that you can just follow the instructions:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Slim_samba2#Install_SlimSamba2_on_a_USB_...

But perhaps someone can help who has done this before?

Simplest way is just to install the Tomato Beta firmware. It has Samba built in and the NTFS drivers needed, etc.

That was the main reason I changed from DD-WRT to Tomato it made it much easier.

But if you need things the DD-WRT has that Tomato doesn't then you may not want to change. So far I have been happy with it.

If samba is not present in DD-WRT then you can add that support. It should not be too much work. All you need to do is to port samba in application and enable some File System support in kernel if they are not enable.
