Okay I just purchased this router @ bestbuy and it had a little sticker telling me to come here :P

the router has been great since I set it up.

I have a few questions

-Does third party firmware void the warranty?

-Does DD-WRT/Tomato bring any features to the table for a guy who just wants a few N devices, around 5 wireless G device, a ps3 and an xbox360 online to the table?

Thanks and I would love to hear about this router from long time users(I got it hoping it wont fry itself and start dropping connections like the Ashtray *erm* WRT160N I had before)

Can someone atleast answer if installing a third party firmware voids the warranty?

you can always flash it back to stock if you dont like third party fw. Don't think it will void anything since they heavily advertise it as a feature. Just like PS3 used to be advertised as Linux compatible and it didn't affect warranty.

gab,
First just so you are aware. This site MyOpenRouter.com is not owned or affiliated with NETGEAR®. So you may not get an official answer here regarding warranties but may get something more like opinions.

And here is my opinion. :)
First of all, any issue I have gone to Netgear with for warranty has always been taken care of.

But their warranty specifically says
"NETGEAR products are covered by a limited liability warranty from defects in material and workmanship. This warranty does not apply if, in the judgement of NETGEAR, the product fails due to damage from shipment, handling, storage, accident, abuse or misuse, or if it has been used or maintained in a manner not conforming to product's instructions, has been modified in any way, or has a defaced or removed serial number. "

Which I can totally understand. Say for instance you installed DD-WRT or Tomato and cranked up the wireless transmit power to way above specs and burned it out?

That would not be a fault of the firmware or the hardware but could be considered a user abuse type situation.  So its not simply a matter that you installed a 3rd party firmware but what you did with it.

So there can be some grey areas. I have always felt that once I add a 3rd party app to a router that I can't expect the manufacturer to warranty something out of their control.

But like I said I have always had great support from Netgear on any product I have purchased from them.

In the end if you are worried about warranty then I would say stick to the stock firmware. Which from your original question of how you are going to use it should work fine.

But again these are just my opnions. Smile

Probly stickin to the stock, and I appreciate both answers :)
I have a question thou, the router stopped sending Wireless signal after its first day of use
I upgraded the frimware(to the latest from Netgear) and set everything again as It was.

My Desktop with a dual band N adapter gets a 130MBPS connection when I click on status.

My laptop with build in wireless N gets 150mbps

both with 5 bars of signal

is it true I have to leave my network unsecure in order to get the 300mbps transfer speed?

Again thanks and I really like the layout of this site, instead of that old clunky forum look :)

And I'm only worried about the warranty because I've had alot of routers die on me due to overheating(I think because they dropped wireless connections every 3-4hours)

and I have my router insured with squaretrade and they rock, they have replaced all of my defective routers with the money I paid for them to go ahead and buy a new one of my choice.so the warranty is a must for me,even though I won't be adding third party fw I would love to read more on this site, it looks neat
