I just replaced a Linksys WRT300N with a new Netgear WNR3500L.

On the laptop I used to make the initial settings I am having intermittent problems sending E-mails.

I had previously used this laptop to set up the old WNR3500 (non-L, v1) and I do see the old account settings pop up when I connect to the 3500L and go into Basic Settings.

On a second laptop I am having no problems.

Both are connected wirelessly using WPA2 and both are sending from the same account.

Could something be stuck in my laptop from the two setups that is creating this problem?

I am using Puppy Linux 4.31 and the Seamonkey 1.1.18 browser.

I never had this problem with the Linksys, so it is somehow related to the Netgear router setup

Thanks!.

I also noticed that when I approved a new member to a Yahoo Group list the page that should show Pending Member status come up blank, as does this page that our son routinely accesses: http://ssbrumble.ipbfree.com/index.php

Could there be a common default setting in the 3500L that would cause the E-mail and the Web anomalies?

Perhaps a filter or something?

Should I do a 30-30-30 reset or some other purge to start fresh?

I want to do the DD-WRT and Tomato change anyhow ... just was hoping to wait until late this evening when no one is using the router.

Thanks!

As I continue my troubleshooting dialog with myself ... let's pretend it is an online journal ...

I allowed Netgear to check for an update and once found allowed it to download and
install.

I did not disconnect anything, not even the Verizon cellphone interface, but it seems to have worked OK as Web access is quicker and E-mail now works.

The one thing that concerns me is the window on my laptop for the Netgear Router SMARTWIZARD is still in the loading mode after 10 minutes or more ...

Upgrading Router Firmware now. Please Wait...

Note:It will take about 1.5 minutes for firmware upgrade.
Please don't turn off the power or press reset button.

Should I presume it is merely a failure to repaint the screen and hit Reset?

Might that brick things?

Got impatient and clicked on Basic Settings then on Router Status

Here's the Router Status ... seems OK ... so must have been a failure of something to repaint the screen ...

Thanks for that as the problem has returned.

Sometimes my usually-reliable E-mail works (outgoing) and sometimes not -- it is working fine incoming.

Sigh.

I am thinking I should get the 3500L working reliably in the generic setup before I make the DD-WRT and Tomato changes.

WDYT?

I'm by no means an expert, especially not in Puppy Linux (although I tinkered with it years ago) but it seems like a good idea (IMO) to start with the stock, generic setup first before moving to the third party firmwares.

I just had to switch back to the Linksys as the Netgear is refusing to connect to my ISP at all. :-(

I'm going to do a 30-30-30 just to be sure it is not internal garbage in the 3500L.

Got the 3500L working *BUT* it is interfering with Outgoing E-mail on one of the three providers I use for E-mail.

It is also causing some problems with certain Web sites.

Is there a default firewall or something not visible in the Netgear Setup?

Spent half the day chasing this to no joy.

Thanks!

David

BTW: All three E-mail setups use Port 25 OUT and Port 110 IN.

Two E-mail providers work with the 3500L, godaddy and our local bulloch.net but my provider's does not.

All three work fine with the Linksys.

Very weird ... and frustrating!

I am back at this - did a 30-30-30 reset last night and brought the Netgear back online - it has been sitting useless on the shelf for two weeks since the last attempt.

I am still frustrated by the intermittent problem - present on the Netgear 3500L but not on my Linksys.

Sometimes everything works fine then a little while later it will only pass some E-mail (Outgoing) and not others and also will not pass some Web browser requests, it is very weird and appears unpredictable.

Has anyone else reported this?

Was it a setting in the 3500L software or some conflict between the 3500L and the ISP?

Was it solved by upgrading to DD-WRT or Tomato or did the problem persist?

This is extremely frustrating!

I *may* have found the problem.

I had the connection set for "Always On".

I changed it to "Dial On Demand" and the timer for "99".

I will report if this remains stable.

I can use my host ISP's E-mail without a problem, and if I put that Outgoing server address in my other E-mail setups they go out OK - but that, of course, will not work for lists that check the Source server.

I just tried to send an E-mail from an account that always works fine on the Linksys. It was a simple text reply to a simple text message - it went to 94% then failed -- stalled actually.

I just trimmed some of the text content and tried to resend and now it stalls at "Delivering Mail", which is the usual problem with most outgoing mail via the Netgear (but not the Linksys).

Just changed the outgoing server to that of my host IP and it went fine.

What would cause that?

If you put the Linksys back, does email flow through mail servers other than the one at your ISP?

May 20, 2010 10:22 AM

Yes, everything works perfectly.

I have E-mailed my ISP to ask them to look and see what might cause their system to not play nicely with the Netgear but to play fine with the Linksys.

It is very very odd.

BTW: I am also having trouble uploading a post to the Puppy Linux Forum:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/

It tries and tries and the fails with this error message:

Bad Request

Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Apache/2.2.8 (Fedora) Server at murga-linux.com Port 80

What does that all mean?

Could it be a hint as to the other problems?

May 20, 2010 10:53 AM

I'm running DD-WRT on my 3500L and don't have either email or browsing problems.

May 20, 2010 10:56 AM

I am expecting someone who is knowledgeable about networking and router-to-isp connections to look at the problem description and spot the problem.

I am guessing there is either some setting in the generic Netgear app or at the ISP that is creating the problem.

May 20, 2010 11:13 PM

I am back on the Linksys - the Netgear would not allow me to post to this forum!

I spoke with my ISP and they gave me a different DNS to use than the default automatic lookup - not a solution.

Still no outgoing on 2 of 3 E-mail hosts, still trouble with youtube, foxnews.com, and other sites, still cannot post to certain forums. Still very frustrated!

I ran the tests on http:/dromaeo.com and everything passed.

I have no idea where to look next but this router has wasted too much of my time and no one seems to understand it well enough to troubleshoot it.

Since I read here that Netgear refuses to support it using some idiotic "It's open source." nonsense I had hoped there were some gurus here ...

Do I go ahead and upgrade to DD-WRT and Tomato and hope that solves the problem?

May 20, 2010 11:33 PM

edoc - I can say that in the past, our platform has experienced login issues with the Opera browser. I had thought we resolved that issue, though. To clarify - are you able to login to the community in Opera on your Linksys router, but not on the WNR3500L? Or are you just not able to log in with Opera at all? (by the way, we did receive your email, and I was going to respond before I spotted this thread update.)

Cheers, Pete

Everything works well with the Linksys in-line, trouble starts when the WNR3500L is connected.

I have tried four different versions of Puppy Linux, and several different Browsers, with both the Linksys and the Netgear. Everything works fine with the Linksys (except I want the DD-WRT and Tomato option and other features of the Netgear).

With the Netgear in-line Opera actually worked better than the other browsers.

The problem is clearly in the WNR3500L.

I did the 30-30-30 reset.

Either the WNR3500L is blocking some content, even though no blocking has been activated, or it is sending something to the ISP causing their system to block certain content.

The Apache error I received when trying to post to the http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/ suggests that the WNR3500L is sending out bad information to the ISP.

It is a PPoE connection via Fiber for DSL. All of the settings are autodetected except DNS, which was autodetected but my ISP gave me a fixed pair to try yesterday -- that did not solve the problem.

This should be essentially plug-n-play.

Question: Is there any chance changing to DD-WRT might solve this or could it be a defective WRT3500L?

I'll have to check the exchange policy from the seller to see if I can exchange it.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll pass this along to NETGEAR (they are active on the forums) and see if they can help...
