Need some router help.  I am in a rented office space, they provide (at cost) one DHCP line in the wall from their DHCP router to each office. How can I put a router in our office to connect the printer and say 3 computers on our local network in our office all access the internet through the IP assigned line they provide us. Say the ip they give us is 10.1.1.126 sbnet 255.255.255.0 can this be my WAN input to my rounter and then setup my own DHCP for my office machines? Can I setup the input to the router as a DHCP source? Do I need DNS addresses? I will reset my router address to like 192.168.1.2 to avoid any conflict with them. Any ideas would be helpful. They want an additional $100.00 a month for each addition line to the office for another computer to access the Internet..

Thanks

I have not decided which Model yet. Wanted to see if it is possible to have a router behind a router and can the setup I need be done. Recommend a reouter model that would do what I need?

Thanks

You can use Netgear WNR3500L for your setup. You will connect the DHCP line to the WAN port of WNR3500L and configure WNR3500L's WAN mode as dynamic. So it will get IP dynamically from your ISP.
By default LAN side of WNR3500L has IP 192.168.1.1 and it assigns IP to your local host dynamically. I think it fulfills your requirement.

One more question. If I setup the 3500L in this office and in an office say 100 feet away I have a local network say a printer and a couple computers. How do I link that network back to the office with the 3500L. Do I need to setup a bridge? Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks

In that local networks how those computers and printers are interconnected ?

The second office uses just a 5 port switch at this point.I assume I need to use a 3500L as a wireless bridge to talk to the other office. Do I follow your procedure to load DD-WRT to convert a second 3500L for the second office to link the 2 lans?

I've got my WNR3500L configured as a wireless bridge using DD-WRT and it works well. If you have two WNR3500L's then you can follow the procedure to convert the second one over. The thing I'm a little concerned about is that 100ft distance the wireless signal has to traverse. I don't know if the WNR3500L can broadcast that far. You may have to get a different wireless router on the main end. Maybe one with an external directional antenna that you can aim one of them in the direction of the second office (if that would be far enough for it to reach?). Or attach and outside wifi transmitter on the main building and aim in in the direction of the secondary office and hook the transmitter up to office internet connection. Whatever you decide to use on the main router, you can still have a wnr3500l as the secondary router configured with dd-wrt as client bridge.

How difficult is picking the correct firmware there seems to be so many versions just to setup and operate as a wireless bridge? The distance is like one office away maybe like 30ft between routers.

Netgear stock firmware does not give you the flexibility to configure WNR3500L as client bridge. You can use DD-WRT (v24-14205_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L) firmware for that purpose. I am not sure but wireless signal of WNR3500L should cover 30ft distance.

Is the DD-WRT firmware fairly straight forward about configuring for a wireless bridge? I have not found any how-to doc on configuring for a wireless bridge. Can the first WNR3500L nonflashed firmware continue to provide DHCP services even across the bridge when completed? I am suprised at the distance I thought this RangeMax routers were the most powerful wireless units out there?

Here is one howto I found:  http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3639271/DD-WRT-Tutorial-3-Bu...

DD-WRT which firmware?
There is dd-wrt.v24=14311_newd-2_k2.6_mini-wnr3500L.CHK then there is

the Big Generic file .bin
the mini generic file .bin
the mini HotSpot file .bin

Which one? Do we need run the .chk first and .bin next?
The last person said v24=14205 but I cannot find that one. Is 14311 just newer?

Thanks

You can get to this from the Downloads->DD-WRT tab of this website. That is the initial file you will need for flashing from the stock firmware. From there you can load the 14311 update or future versions of DD-WRT for this router.

http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/19042/DD-WRT-for-WNR3500L-v24-K2.6-svn14289-Mini-CHK-BETA/

I use the Mini build for what I need. The other versions are for the more advanced features for what you need. Just be sure that you flash the right version of DD-WRT that is compatible with the router's hardware or else you will end up bricking it.
