I have the 3500L and two $30 Trendnet TEW-637AP's which are designed specifically to do what you want. I did what you said but in reverse.
WDS only supports WEP so that wasn't an option for me. The Trendnets were configured into AP Client mode. What that means is that the Trendnets connected as AP clients (not WDS) and were using WPA not WEP.
Then I put duplicate SSIDs, AP Names, and hardcoded channels on the Trendnets. This let me move from room to room, floor to floor using one WIFI connection and roaming between WIFI APs. This worked well for my AXIS WIFI cameras which are a pain to configure. No matter where I moved the Axis camera, it connected using the same settings. I had to use WPA to support the Axis cameras, thus no WPA2 for my case.
I am running Tomato now on the 3500L. The instructions for doing this on Tomato are located here;

Hi
I´ve been a WNR3500L owner for a couple of hours and i´ve been scratching my head now just as long thinking of perhaps returning this unit since it seems like it does not have the primary function i bought it for...? (in the store i was not aware that it had possibility for alternat firmware and stuff, doubt that the salesdude had it either...)
Q: Is it possible to use the WNR3500L gigabit ethernet While the unit uses WLAN as a REPEATER with WPA2 AES PSK to send/receive with my existing DIR-615 firewall? (swapping place is not an options since i want/need the gigaports for my servers that are down in the basement)
So far i´ve only been able to use is as a repeater when disabling encryption and/or using WEP. Which obviously is not a option.
I am using the latest vanilla firmware (auto updated today)
Must i use tomato or dd-wrt or some other build? (I´d prefer not to manufacture serial usb cables and beeing forced to spend hours fiddling with tftp ssh and stuff -i get enough of that at work... I just want it to work out of the box.) :)
So what do you experts say? Have i missed something, is firmware flash a must or is return to shop my only option?
Thank you in advance.
ps
I did search for similar post, but did not find a good answer. I´m sorry if i missed an older thread.
Best regards
Magnus
Hello Edwin
Thank you for your answer, i will try with Tomato build, but first i must check best practice to do a roll back to factory "vanilla" defaults in case i decide to return the unit. The USB port on the back looks interesting, wonder if it would be possible to share an HDD with NFS to my ESXi, perhaps a discussion better suited for another thread though... ;-)
Cheers
Where is the Any key...
I downloaded dd-wrt installed everything went fine on my Netgear WNR3500L, did a 30-30-30. Then i loaded Tomato_1_28 from official page (i guess this is where i vent wrong...) and upgraded my router with a file called "WRT54G_WRT54GL.bin" thinking this was the right one to use. i dont know why i believed this was the right one to use and perhaps it was stupid of me to think this file was compatible with Netgear WNR3500L.
Everything looked good i followed the step by step instructions and upgrade process completed Successfully and then it rebooted.
It looks like that was the last time this unit was working...
Now i have only got a yellow power led (instead of blue) and link indication on lan port 1. It seems my router has been bricked?
As it is now when i do a 30-30-30 or a plain power cycle the unit responds for One-Two pings only on 192.168.1.1 then it goes silent. I guess this Netgear unit did not like the Linksys firmware?...
I have tried several 30-30-30 resets and also DrayTek Router Tools to tftp back anything (dd-wrt mini) that can make it work again.
However, So far no success. I guess i have myself to blame for not beeing more careful when checking that this tomato was of a bad kind...
Unless someone has a miracle solution i will play dumb and claim this unit as DOA when returning it to the store. Then i will look for something else to use as a WLAN repeater that also has Gbps eth.

now only way would be to debrick it with a serial cable. you would have to start tftp within the CFE. then tftp a working image to it. there is a good article about this within this site. but yes the easiest way would be to return it, i would suggest just getting another one, its a very fine router.

Now this should be easy:-)
Remove the covers from the router, prepare some screwdriver etc. that allows you to short pin these connectors:
http://chainsawdwarfrider.free.fr/router-shorcut.jpg
Connect a PC to the router and configure it's network card to 192.168.1.1.
Now important part:
press the reset button and power on, still hold the reset button for 30s release the button and immediately short the pins, now you should be able to constantly ping the router. If that the case you can tftp an original netgear image to it.
The serial method requires to solder some pinouts, this looks easy on the pictures but is not that easy without the appropriate equipment. I did this at work where I had magnifiers, a bench vise solder sucker etc.
Hi guys.
Thank you very much for your help! I am very grateful. :) Actually i found the screwdriver hint yesterday, so with a help of an old screwdriver and a small kitchen knife^^ (i have no torques) i managed to unscrew and debrick my router with a shortcut, it was really simple to do! :D
Then I uploaded tomato fw with Drysak "Firmware Upgrade Utility" and PRESTO! After a little configuration my WNR3500L now is a Wireless Ethernet Bridge with gigabit ethernet for my servers in the basement which now can communicate with wlan to the rest of my network. It works perfect just as i intended. :-)
Now i am so excited over this software and all new capabilities so i went ahead and flashed my DLink DIR-615 D1 with dd-wrt (havent seen tomato for DIR-615), So much more stuff to use and check out.
This is awesome and i am glad i decided not to give up.
Thank you again for all help guys.

Hmmm i just realized that i also have a DLink DWL-G700AP, i wonder... hehe ;-)
