Ive been looing for a new router for a few weeks on and off, since my ISP provided "bebox" modem/router is very basic, and I need some extra fucitonality, so I am going to use it as modem ony, and hook up a more spohisticated router for my needs...

Im a bit reluctant to go down the netgear route, as Ive had a couple of cheaper models in the past which have never really performed well, and people generally slate them... but I am rather impressed with this model, and am prepared to give them another go...

I was stuck between this, and a new Buffalo model, which after reading dd-wrt supported devices, has some issues with for example, optware  -  which cannot be installed.. not really knowing what that was lol, I did a bit of research, and thought it could be a handy tool to have available, so I scrathced the Buffalo of my list...

The netgear seems to tick all of the boxes, but one thing I really want to use it for is a usb print server, I would never consider using one of these devices as a NAS purely becuase read/write speed must be shocking with inadequate resource to handle high throughput, and I have a Windows Home Server, and online storage to cater for those needs anyway...

So, putting it simply, does this work as a print server??  Ive read a few posts which say they have got it working, and others who havent.. so is it that hit and miss???

Can someone please conclusively confirm, before I order??

Thanks

WNR3500L should support USB printer. Couple of guys already tested it successfully. Below links might help you.

Thanks for the links, I had read them.. but just hoped there would be more poeple using the router to print via their network... Ive perhaps read more that cant get it working!!! "Should" is by no means a "will"... bit of a gamble then I suppose, but then its not like I print daily, so its not a show stopper...

Think Ill take the plunge with this one, and see how it goes... cheers!!!

Just a note latest dd-wrt and tomato builds have p910d onboard no need to install this via optware. My build 14584 does not have it included I first have to check how much space it consumes.

Is space an issue on these things, when it comes to installing additonal options??

Should have it to time to have a play over the weekend!!!

Ok, so used latest beta (DD-WRT v24-sp2 (07/18/10) big
), with added printer support.. enabled USB, printer etc etc.. added COnfigured printer to use port 9100 and IP of router, raw mode.. and.. nothing, just says offline...

Anything else I need to be doing???

Thanks

Fixed.. messing about with printer options, and selected Use Printer Offline, and it appeared!!!!...

Now, the only thing I wanted was VPN access to my home network.... and Ill be well happy with this purchase"

Ok, ran into a strange problem, itworks fine from my wired pc... set it up on my laptop (wifi), and it initially works fine.. completed test print from multiple user accounts. Reboot laptop, tried printing again.. and nothing comes out, just sits in q...

I can delete printer and local tcp-ip port and recreate, and it works again, until I reboot laptop...

Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (07/18/10) big
Windows 7 x64

Any ideas???

So somehow information about printer becomes invalid when you do reboot. This should not be related with the WNR3500L firmware. Can you try this with another laptop/desktop ?
Kong, did you face similar kind of problem with this firmware ?
