Hard reset is mainly required when nothing is working in the board but the firmware is not corrupted. If you can access the console of the board in those situation then erasing nvram parameters might work.

Here it says that once dd-wrt is up you can skip the hard reset procedure and just use the build in eresing nvram feature.
Is this confirmed to work flawless with netgear 3500l?
