Hi guys,

I have just released a new build of my dd-wrt mod. It is now based on dd-wrt build 15000.

It fixes a few minor issues that have been discovered since my last build.

In addition to that it includes a first attempt to fix unclean filesystems due to broken umount on reboots. Please test this and report back if it is working as expected.

Here is the Download

@Peter, as always please update the link in the download section, thanks.

Excellent! Kong, I am updating the link in our download section as we speak, and it should be finished in a few moments.

@Kong:

Unfortunately, this build is not working too well for me. My upload speeds were cut to 1/3, web browsing was very slow. FYI - I had the virtual interface (guest network turned on). Maybe that has something to do with it. But definitely very sluggish compared to your last build.

So I'm loving the Kong builds.. Def seeing speed increases, but just can't get Samba to work the way I expected it to.. I had it running on a standard DD-WRT config before I went to Kong - not sure what to do.

I adjusted the drive (which had 3 partitions before - JFS / Swap / Data) to a single EXT3 data partition.

The router mounts it just fine, and when telnetting in, going to /mnt shows all the data. However, looking at the share (\\) it sinmply shows a Public folder which I can't write to, nor can I see this folder anywhere via telnet (so I can't even move the data into it). Any help would be truly apprecaited..

Thanks!

Ok - and figured it out by using custom config - copy and pasting the smb.conf file and replacing the jjfs in the path with mnt... Where would I edit the conf file via telnet? Or unneeded?

I hard reset and reconfigured without wireless virtual interface. Everything is OK now.

I just installed this great Kong mod firmware and configured samba. It works great. Just mount it to "Jffs", disabled proftp, disabled read only (file sharing) and voila. I can write to my usb using samba and my arch linux client.

Also, I dont know what changed in DDWRT 15000, but I dont get wireless errors like before. I use 5 mW TX power and no wireless packet errors on display. Those errors were driving me crazy. Je, je....Million thanks Kong. Keep this great work.

Yes that's the way to go, use the standard smb.conf edit it to your needs and then add it in the custom config text box.

Does this simply pre-configure DD-WRT for a smooth 3500L experience and addon/expand some features, or does it disable anything in DD-WRT?

Sorry for the newb question (or if it's an inappropriate place to ask). I ordered my 3500L last night, and am trying to "crash course" my head through all the complexities of setting up a repeater subnet with exactly the features you seem to have added.

Need Mac/Linux/Win7/Xbox/Android all on subnet and able to securely share data with each other and access the webs through a router shared by all housemates (12 of them) who are not remotely security minded or tech saavy. Hoping to use USB2 drive as Nas (speed not critical) and access it via Samba and Xbox networking.

This mod is basically a sandard dd-wrt build + extra functionality + speed optimizations, see:

Can anyone kindly test if they can get client bridging AND virtual wireless interface working at the same time?

I can't get client bridging to work unless I don't enable virtual wireless interface (after a 30-30-30 reset). For some reason on my unit, when I turn on virtual interface, it is very sluggish.

I suppose repeater bridge with a different SSID is an option, but that would affect bandwidth right?

Any wireless client will affect bandwidth. If one client sends the others have to wait for their slot.
So using another SSID should not matter in terms of bandwidth.

@Kong:

I can't find it at the moment, but I thought I read somewhere that repeater bridging cuts the available bandwidth for wireless clients in half.

In any event, I will give this a shot, as it should be equivalent to a guest network + client bridge.

Once you run a bridge or you connect another client the rate has to be divided.

Example:

1AP - 1Client send with max bandwidth-> 300Mbps

1AP - 2Clients send with max bandwidth -> 2x150Mbps (if only one sends at full speed he gets full 300Mpbs

1AP - 3Clients send with max -> 3x100Mbps

1AP - 1Bridge 1 Client -> 2x150Mpbs (in this case indeed you only have 150Mpbs)

The reason for this is because if one sends the others have to listen, so AP sends, bridge sends, client gets. So you have to wait twice until client can send data.

@ Kong:

OK. I just set up the repeater and it works just fine! Thanks for the great build.

Also, I have tested this firmware on a wrt610nv2 and it works just fine too (I did not try guest network on that one). The signals/connections/speeds in that unit are outstanding! Your build is actually a perfect match for that router.

It would be super if I could load your firmware on a E3000 but that unit requires a special mod build, I believe.

Awesome. Up and running on a secure subnet that's lightening fast.

Thanks Kong! Was really painless to get it up and running. I have some questions on setup of the NAS, but will make a thread for that. Thanks to everyone that contributes to this site... tons of info found here made this painless.

@Kong:

Lest someone else may try, the E3000 build bricked my unit. You may wish to pull it from this board.

Not to worry - I have read up on the serial TTL revival procedure in the dd-wrt forum and will follow it. Gives me something to do in my spare time! :)

Thanks anyway.

Hi taekwon3dan,

thanks for letting me know. If you have a TTL Cable you could show me the output you get from the bricked unit, before you unbrick it.
This build is exactly the same as the wnr build, only difference is that at the end addpattern is called to add some version info to the build.

In addition to that I just checked, if you flashed with the mini build with e3000 in its name you can just use my broadcom build, same as for the wnr, to flash through dd-wrt interface.

Hey Kong (and other knowledgable individuals on here),

Anyone else trying to run Netflix streaming on the iphone/ipad? There is a problem with the DNSmasq on dd-wrt that rejects any streaming connection from them. Here is a link to the discussion: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=478460

I disabled the DNSmasq options but than lost my ability to get to any website. Any work-arounds, or updates that can help remedy this?

Thanks for you all your help!

September 7, 2010 2:55 PM

The discussion over at the dd-wrt forum pretty much describes the problem.

Builds > 15049 now have a new option in webinterface to set "No DNS Rebind", which resolves this issue, but again loosens security a bit by allowing dns-rebinding.

To prevent the latest dns rebind attacks there should be a different approach.

September 7, 2010 7:25 PM

Dan,

There are two ways to get around the Netflix bug:

1) Don't disable DNSmasq completely, but uncheck "Use DNSMasq for DHCP" and "Use DNSMasq for DNS" under Setup -> Basic Setup. As Kong mentioned, this does loosen security a tad.

2) On your iPhone, go into the Advanced settings for your Wifi network and change the DNS IP to 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4. Both of these correspond to Google's Public DNS and seemingly get around the problem that kicks you out of your Netflix video before it loads.

Good luck!

Thanks Kong & Dima-- That info was exactly what I needed!

I read several comment about how to set up the Samba in the download section but yet, I haven't found any actual article about it. There is also reference about the custom config called smb.conf. Anyone can show where to read such information. Thanks.
