My ISP is AT&T with DSL on 2wire modem/router.  I was able to turn off routing in the 2wire and use it just as a modem and connect to my WNR3500L.  The WNR3500L now handles all the routing.  My average download speed is 1.3mb and upload 300kb.  My question is does tomato or DD-WRT firmware allow me to adjust the bandwidth from my ISP provider so i can have faster access speeds from the internet?  I havent flashed yet, but just curious.

Your internet speed can't be improved by your router, unless your router is already slowing your internet.

sandbox is rigth. Opensource routers are slower than stock firmware.

Just to clarify, dd-wrt or tomato are able to handle around 100Mbit/s while the netgear firmware can handle around 200Mbit/s, but this is because netgear is using a fast nat module that does not have all features of the standard nat module.
