Probably the best way you can achieve this is by using my dd-wrt vpn mod, with integrated privoxy( http://www.privoxy.org/) + fraters optware scripts running zabbix (http://www.zabbix.com/)
A WNR3500L (64MB RAM) or Asus RT-N16 (128MB RAM) should be able to handle the amount of clients and have enough power for filtering etc., but you would need another machine in your lan that acts as a zabbix server monitoring the router, in order to log traffic send notifications etc.
Those programming skills of yours will come in handy when it comes to creating rules and configs for privoxy, zabbix

Hi,
I need to setup a router for a small hostel with 52 beds. A lot of the residents have more than one wifi device, so the router must be capable of handling 50-100 clients. The current router just doesnt let anyone connect to the wifi if there are too many clients connected already.
One important feature is traffic monitoring, since the hostel has only a certain amount of traffic available every month the owners must be able to watch how much is being used. It would be great if one could see how much traffic each client used to identify who is downloading stuff (which is not allowed in the hostel, but people still do it!).
It would be great if one could set the router up to email the staff if the traffic goes up to quickly!
Another important feature is being able to block websites and setup rules only to allow connections to certain outgoing ports. The current router has the limitation of only allowing 8 rules, which is not enough.
I have a lot of experience with linux and programing in c and php, so if some of the things I need are possible, but just not integrated in the firmware's gui, I could do that myself.
Can you please recommend me a router and which firmware would allow me to do all that?
Greetings, Kim
I have similar useage as you, in large apartment buildings, but with more clients.
Take a look here and on the different forums, for suitable firmware builds to achieve what you need.
