I'm having some issues with getting this device working right. I have a Linksys WRT310Nv2 router that I replaced with the WNR3500L. Previously, I had a DynDNS account configured for allowing FTP on the Mac. I was attempting to get a VPN working on the Linksys router, but kept hitting brick walls (after tests, I believe that it was the router, hence purchasing the WNR3500L). My FTP is working fine after forwarding the FTP ports and it resolves through my DNS no trouble there, but the VPN is a completely different animal. I've been struggling for almost a week to get this running.

I have ports 4500, 500, and 1701 forwarded to the OS X box (with a static DHCP) to be used as the server, and plan on utilizing L2TP and possibly PPTP for the connection protocols. (I plan on using both OS X and Windows clients to access the server.) I'd like to get the L2TP working first and can then fiddle with PPTP.

Do I need to enable a separate VPN passthrough feature on this router, or are just forwarding the ports enough? (Sorry haven't touched any other brand than Linksys for years.) I'm really at a loss here. Could my OS X firewall be causing a problem? From what I can see based on my console logs, it seems that incoming connections on the server IP address are being somehow blocked. (It is my belief that it was the router.) Should I flash with DD-WRT, or is the stock firmware fine for my purposes? I guess I kind of need a step-by-step here for this. I understand quite a bit about networking, but have never before in my life set up a VPN server. It's frustrating because for everyone else it seems to work, but MAN am I having issues.

Thanks a lot for anyone who can help!

I'm having exactly the same problem.

However, the VPN connection works in my internal homenetwork, BOTH PPTP and L2TP.

When trying to connect from the outside, I can see in my router log that my connection is coming all the way to the router(Linksys E4200). I have forwarded 500, 1701 and 4500 UDP for L2TP and 1723 TCP for the PPTP connection. Nothing happens in my minimac ivpn server.

Any suggestions?

Hey Gnotab,

I forgot I even opened this question. Ha! Actually what I did a few months ago was ditch the Linksys and iVPN software altogether. Kind of a waste of money in my opinion. I flashed the WNR3500L with DD-WRT open firmware and started to configure the VPN through there using OpenVPN. As far as I could tell the problem that I was running in to was through unsupported router firmware based on what I wanted to do with the Linksys. Instead of running the VPN server on the box, the Netgear router IS the VPN server with this setup!

Haven't touched the VPN setup for a few months due to work and an injury. I was able to generate my certificate and keys without any problems, but still had an issue with getting the DNS resolution from outside my network. I think my addressing is screwed up because you need to make sure you assign a separate subnet to connect to for VPN connections - if you don't do that you will run in to addressing issues (not being able to be assigned a correct IP based on existing devices on your network from what I understand). I think once I get back in to it, the whole process will be quite simple. I may knock this out as a weekend project. Been dying for months wanting remote access to all my stuff at home while I'm on the road!

Hope you find a solution that works out for you. DD-WRT setup can be a bit of a pain in the beginning, but it was pretty easy after reading through the preliminaries, however, MAKE SURE THAT YOU USE THE CORRECT FIRMWARE AND THAT YOUR DEVICE IS SUPPORTED. I bought the WNR3500L specifically because its specs allowed me to do the full load of the firmware. It's really sweet stuff. Check it out.

Good luck finding your solution!
