I followed this howto:

and now cannot ping my router.

What can I do now before buying a serial cable?

So, to clarify, you had DD-WRT on your router previously, tried the tutorial to return it to the NG factory firmware, and now you can't ping it?

If all that is correct, have you tried a 30-30-30 reset? That would be the first thing I would try.

All in all, though, if you're going to be installing/changing firmwares, a serial cable is truly indispensable.

Before I got a JTAG Adapter I used the short pin method which, see my comment here:
