On my WNR3500L, I am making the jump from the Netgear firmware to DD-WRT Kong Mod USB/FTP/SSAMBA3/OpenVPN/Proxy build 15758.

I have downloaded and unzipped Kong's dd-wrt-usb-ftp-samba3-vpn-O2-v24-K26-broadcom.bin from here and dd-wrt.v24-14205_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk from here.

These two files are saved on my Win XP computer that is ethernet wire to the WNR3500L. I have also saved my NETGEAR_WNR3500L.cfg file from the Netgear GUI.

My understanding is that I should then:

  • Perform a 30/30/30 reset on the WNR3500L
  • Using Firefox 3.6.13 on the XP computer, log in to the Netgear GUI and do a router upgrade to dd-wrt.v24-14205_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk
  • After a router reboot, I should then be able to enter the DD-WRT GUI and perform a firmware upgrade to Kong's dd-wrt-usb-ftp-samba3-vpn-O2-v24-K26-broadcom.bin

Is all this looking correct?

Yes. This is the correct way: first flashing the mini DDWRT in CHK format, then you can flash from dd-wrt GUI any opensource firmware: dd-wrt, Kong version or not, TomatoUSB, Toastman tomato Mod, and so on.

Flash directly the final desired firmware from Mini dd-wrt, without changing any setting, especially admin password, to keep default password.

Thank you Striatum. I will do this jump tomorrow and report back here.

My reason for choosing this Kong's mod is mainly because I want the USB and OpenVPN on my router.

You've got this both on Kong'mod and TomatoUSB. Many features are the same between those two firmwares. You can easily go from one to an other and revert.

All went well. Before starting, I studied Peter's Installing and Getting Started with DD-WRT on NETGEAR WNR32500L article. Following this article, I had Kong's VPN Mod build 15758 up and running within the hour with no major problems.

After installing, I set a new username and strong password. I then went to Setup>Basic Setup, set a local IP (I prefer that), and the Time Zone, DST settings and my preferred time server.

Then it was to Wireless>Basic Settings to set my SSID and to disable SSID Broadcast (improves my security). Next was to Wireless>Wireless Security were I set Security Mode to WPA2 Personal (all my wireless erquipment can handle that), set the WPA Algorithm to AES, and entered my strong WPA Shared Key.

The last two steps for me in this initial setup were to go to NAT/QoS>UPnP to enable UPnP Service and Services>USB to enable USB Support.

Rebooted everything on my network just to be sure, and found all working well. I am feeling much more confident now.

Later I will start playing with this, my first opensource router firmware.

To all the contributers to this forum, a big thank you.

Good deal. There are a lot of options to play with that will probably keep you busy. :)
Don't forget to back up your router settings before changing too much. ;)
