This is very much a personal choice. My main machine is an i7 at 4.2GHz, ATI graphics, multi monitor setup, 7TB HDD. So you can imagine that a netbook wouldn't compare very well. However, for what it's worth - I get all manner of machines here to diagnose and fix for clients, and lately I have seen many such netbooks.
Atom based machines are, I admit, slightly faster to use than an abacus, but it's all I can do to avoid beating them to death with a hammer even in the short time I have them in my workshop. My wife wanted one and argued with me that they were the bees knees, and so she got one for much the same reasons you outline above. I notice now that it sits unused on the shelf most of the time, and she has reverted to using a pencil as a means of taking notes. It appears the "new toy" feeling has worn off and reality has taken over. Now even my kids don't want to use it, though it makes them look important while they are carrying it around.
Go occupy your local retail shop and use one for a few hours, see what you think before you splash out your hard earned cash. Mostly, it depends on what you're used to.
