I'm planning to flash my wnr3500L to Tomato or DD-Wrt. I still see Tomato and DD-Wrt as beta. So, I need to know which one is more stable and better performance (download/upload speed and QoS). I hear DD-Wrt can change the Tx power. Can Tomato do that too? Also, if I don't like them, is it possible to flash back to the original netgear firmware?

Thanks,

lvlech

The "beta" in this case is not cearly as accurate than in a classical project. In fact the two projects are in perpetual developpement, so they prefer using the beta term to rember you that they cannot be reponsible for dommages ...

They are stable, I use Tomato (Toastman or not) for a while and have no stability problem. Only sometimes bugs if you want to install the latest latest version... but generally they are rapidly corrected.

Download speed from WAN is not a problem, the only real problem if speed is through wifi perhaps compared with Netgear original firmware (both Tomato and DD-WRT).

For QoS, latests Toastman Tomato builds are very intersting, with introduction of a new MAC/IP bandwidth limitation that will replace the 'ancient system'.
(see here : http://www.4shared.com/dir/v1BuINP3/Toastman_Builds.html the Readme file for details, and the correct builds are in the RT-N16 section. IPv6 GUI and 6to4 tunneling is implemented, experimental and in testing).

You can easily switch between Tomato and DD-WRT Kong mod, and reverting from Tomato to Original firmware seems easily possible, even if some havev reported problems.

Have you restarted the router with the Tomato firmware yet? I need to reset the router at least once a week when using the netgear firmware.

I use Tomato since last summer... So many restarts lol... After each firmware flash, after some settings changes that need reboot.. No problem.

I mean I restart the router if I need to... No bug making it rebooting alone.

Why do youi need to reset the router once a week?

Sometimes during the week, the internet stops working. It only happens when 3 computers are on. I just need to reset the router and the internet is back. I was thinking that the 3rd party firmware could do better.

I don't know as it can depends on many factors, but I have sometimes 4 machines connected to the net and my router is OK.

@lvlmech, with my previous dd-wrt build I never had to restart the router due to problems, I had uptimes > 30 days without a single problem.

Thanks. I'll give it a try sometimes this week.
