I recently upgraded the Kong build on my WNR3500L to DD-WRT Kong Mod USB/FTP/SAMBA3/OpenVPN/Proxy build 18010M.
The new firmware is just as installed with a new username and password set in the GUI.
I go to Services>USB:
USB Support
I then select Apply Settings and Save before connecting my external Seagate 320GB x 5400rpm HDD to the USB port and re-boot the router. Services>USB now reports:
Disk Info
Block device, size 298.1 GiB (320072933376 bytes)
DOS/MBR partition map
Partition 1: 298.1 GiB (320070288384 bytes, 625137282 sectors from 63)
Type 0x83 (Linux)
Ext3 file system
Volume name "NSDNAS"
UUID B50F9129-EB46-4DCB-B949-551126BD4621 (DCE, v4)
Volume size 298.1 GiB (320070287360 bytes, 78142160 blocks of 4 KiB)
Mountpoints:
/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 mounted to /tmp/mnt/disc0-part1
All is looking good, so I then go to Services>NAS:
Shares = None
Users = None
I then select Apply Settings and Save before I re-boot the router. I rechecked Services>USB and Services>NAS and they report the same as above.
On the same computer (Win XP SP3) that I used the GUI to perform the above, I then try to connect to my router's USB HDD using the Add Network Place Wizard. The WNR3500L router is shown, but when I click on it, the router's USB HDD is now displayed.

This was solved by adding an entry in the Services>NAS File Sharing - Shares section.
I will update my Simple NAS Set-up topic as soon as I have the time.
