Hi!
I just bougt a new WNR3500Lv2 after beeing stuck with an operator forced crap router (thomson tg789vn) for 6 months. In the good old days I had my own Linux box as firewall (iptables) and router so I'm no rookie to the basics of Linux routing, but unfortunately I've been to much manager the last 5+ years and too little hacker (not a day that I don't think about going back to beeing a dev instead...).
So I did the initial config in the default firmware (just changed the password, the SSID of the WiFi and the key for it, set up some port forwarding to my basement 2008R2 server and that was about it.
After all was running fine I could not resist to try the Tomato firmware and installed it - and it really looks awsome! When uploading it asked if I really wanted to updrade with the new firmware as it was the same version as the old one. I guess that is so as the Tomato one is built upon the current official Netgear release?
So - my question, after upgrading to Tomato all my settings where working, my admin password, my WiFi settings etc. It did however loose my port forwarding. So should I do a complete NVRAM reset erasing all old settings as the Tomato FAQ says?
"If you upgraded from another firmware, a complete reset is recommended. Go to Administration/Configuration and select "Erase all NVRAM..." after installing Tomato."
I mean, it seems to work and it's based on the same base firmware so is an NVRAM erase really necessary?
