Blinking power LED after upgrade to non-Netgear firmware

Hi, I purchased _two_ WGR614v8/L today and I wanted to flash the latest Tomato firmware to them. I did it as described: opened the GUI, went to Upgrade Firmware, selected .chk-File and upgraded the router. After the Test LED stops to blink the router seems to restart and then a couple of seconds later the green power LED starts to blink. The only thing I can do after this point is pinging the router (192.168.1.1) and "downgrading" to original firmware via TFTP. A reset (hold the pin 20 seconds) does not seem to work either. The same s*** happens with the other router. Could it be my fault? Any ideas? Both serials start with 1W61867... Thanks in advance!

A WGR614L as an NTP Time Server? Hmmm...

Hello All - I wonder if it would be possible to make an NTP time server out of the WGR614L. Does the WGR614L have a real-time-clock? If so, is it half-way decent (like within 10 seconds a day)? Does it have one or two serial UARTs like the Linksys WRT54GL? What about GPIO? There needs to be a way to get a reference into the box. What about the CPU crystal or resonator. Can it be replaced by a clock generator? What's the frequency? Quite a while ago I looked at doing an NTP server like this, the target was my Linksys WRT54GL to which I added two "real" RS-232 ports, one as a console and the other to receive the 1pps reference. But there were issues: The WRT54GL's RTC was awful. I wouldn't trust it for any amount of hold-over time and I can imagine NTP having trouble with it at all times as well. Also, I couldn't find an NTP package for the distros available at the time, DD-WRT and OpenWrt if memory-serves. NTP is preferred but I could live with an OpenNTP package if it were available. I'll look at the current distros to see what's new...

when I try to upload the Netgear wgr614l_1_1_2_1_0_23_na.chk, or when I try to upload tomato from the dd-wrt Administration Firmware Upgrade screen. I get a 'incorrect image file' error message, all firmware was downloaded from the myopenrouter.com site. How do I go back to the original Netgear firmware? My problem with dd-wrt is that I cannot connect to the wireless network at any level of security, WPA2 Personal, WPA, or no security. The wireless is enabled, but no client connection. ugh.

Hi, Just bought a WGR614L router and got DD-WRT running just fine on it. I noticed that the standard WGR614L DD-WRT firmware available is the 'mini' version, which does not include all the packages I'd like to use -- mainly, I want OpenVPN support. I've been reading through how to use the ipkg utility to install other OpenWRT packages, but after enabling JFFS2 and cleaning the volume, I get "cannot create directory /jffs2/usr: Input/Output Error" when trying to update the packages, even though I have 700k showing as free. Does anyone know how to install OpenWRT packages with ipkg on the WGR614L, or alternately, does anyone know if the newest v24 "VPN" version DD-WRT for Broadcom chipsets will work on this model router? Thanks in advance for any info...

What about more powerful and competetive version of router so dev's can have real fun? :)

What about more powerful version where community development model can truly shine? One of competitors has something like 32Mb RAM, 8Mb Flash, 264MHz CPU, 2xUSB 2.0 ports on board. At ~$90...$100price tag. So, not only there is much more place to add features, there is new classes of features possible.Like autonomous http, ftp, torrent downloader, small web server, file sharing (actually, small NAS) with USB camera it can be a security device, with printer it is a print server and so on. So, Cool Router 2.0 (tm) :) should have more RAM and flash than 16Mb and 4Mb, support .n draft and ideally should have gigabit switch (and more powerful CPU to cope with all this). As well as some USB ports to have fun and bunch of nice cool features :).That's where open source development model can be pretty effective and device's features can be improved to beat competitor's implementations due to opensource development model. Actually mentioned competitor's device became quite popular due to all features and alternate firmwares turning device into The Thing which can do almost everything and speed optimizations can make a difference (VPN client in alternate firmware is 2.5x faster than in stock one!). Actually, the...

A couple of questions

I have been hoping to find a router such as this for quite a while but I have a few questions if anyone 'in the know' would be so kind to answer them... 1. Is the hardware/firmware capable of supporting jumbo frames? (I am thinking 'no' since it is only 100mbit) 2. Is there a limit on the number of ports that I can configure in the Port Forwarding section? If so, what is the limit? On question 2, I have been through many routers that limit the number of ports that can be configured and it always seems to be one or two short of what I need. (And I hate setting up a DMZ host) Thanks for any answers.

HI, This is my frst post here. I've just come across this product. I can't say enough how great I think it is that you guys are actually marketing an open router. I REALLY want this to succeed as a product because a big success here will send a very positive message to all other equipment manufacturers out there, about the reality that opensource and home developers/experimenters do exist as a larger group than they realise, and we are worth providing products and support for. Having said that, there are 2 things I think will be absolutely critical to a big sucess of this product that I feel are being totally ignored so will almost certainly cause this product to get overlooked by the marketplace. 1) BETTER ADVERTISING. I'm a professional software developer, tech. enthusiast and general tweaker of home tech. I surf the net for hours every day (don't tell my boss) reading tech stuff yet even I've only just now found out about this product, and basically found this website almost by accident. The many Linux, opensource and mainstream hardware websites like "Toms Hardware" love to hear about this kindof thing. Send them one so they can do...

The existing email notification for content related stuff (available in various Netgear routers) is fine for those who want that. I don't happen to care about it, but it's not skin off my nose. I'd be interested in piggybacking on top of that to get notification of network events. My primary interest is in various kinds of attacks from the WAN side, but it might also be nice to occasionally get notification streams when devices (particularly WIFI) attached/detached, etc.

My Router Wishlist

Hi All, I'm a self employed system admin/consultant based in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. All of my customers would be considered small businesses. All of them are using Linux in some fashion. I've used a few different routers with Open-WRT and would love one platform to standardize on. Here is my wishlist: Fast CPU and more RAM: Most of my customers are remotely managed. For this, I use OpenVPN in combination with Shorewall Firewall. None of the base consumer grade open sourceable routers have the beef to handle it with the exception of the ASUS WL-500G Premium. Even this one leaves a little to be desired. It has a MIPS32 processor at 266MHz. The memory requirements are quite steep as well. Using the conntrack feature of the 2.6 kernel is quite a memory hog. The ASUS barely manages at 32M. 64M would be ideal. Crypto Accelerator: This is more of a dream item. If the CPU is fast enough to handle 25 or so simultaneous OpenVPN connections using AES-256, it's not really necessary. Must have open source drivers available and work with OpenSSL and OpenVPN supporting AES256 and SHA512. Storage Subsystem: The closest router I've tried that matches my requirements...
