I made a 3.3v to +-12 RS232 adapter for my WRG614 and was able to succesfully connect it to my terminal emulator. However, the serial set up was 9600,n,8,1, not 115200.... and the debug port spewed out a much different console status. Not the mentioned CFE> prompt. It ended up with the Unix Login: prompt. 1) Is login disabled by default? If not what is a default factory user name/password. root:passwd admin:passwd don't seem to work. 2) Is it possible to flash the router with minimal Linux and use it as a single board computer of sorts. My intended application was to connect a GPS to the debug port and have a program imbedded in the router, record the NEMA data from the GPS. When the board got near an unsecured Wifi, it would upload as much of the recorded track as possible to a server. If these questions have already been answered, I appologize for being a noob to open router, I could not find them anywhere on this site. Thanks Richard Below is the debug port spew. Attaching to TFFS... done. Loading /fl/APIMG1... Decompressing... / OK. Starting at 0x80010000... /fl/ - Volume is OK Reading Configuration File "/fl/apcfg"....

I recently had an issue with my WGR614L and finally found the time to wire in a serial connection. I attempted to debrick it earlier today, following the instructions here (they should be the same for both WGR614L and WNR3500L.) I have successfully re-flashed the WNR3500L using the same method countless times. Everything seems to work fine up until the point where I run the "put" command in tftp to send the new firmware to the router, which is connected via minicom. It successfully sends the file, and the router seems to have received it, but it does not enter the programming screen (see photos above of the windows I had open at the time) It sits there with the green power light flashing, the orange check mark lit solid, and doesn't do anything else. I can ping the router at 192.168.1.1. I have tried both the original NETGEAR firmware and DD-WRT (multiple builds.) I have tried multiple 30-30-30 resets, too. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Well, my WGR614L died yesterday and I *think* it's my own fault. I had loaded the most recent build of DD-WRT that I know of, which I believe is this one: http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/12568/DD-WRT-build-svn-revision-12357M/ Out of nowhere, it just died, stuck as in the photo shown. The "Test" LED is constantly lit. When network devices are connected, they show as connected, but no wireless access. A 30-30-30 reset didn't have any effect, unfortunately. I haven't yet tried to debrick it yet, since I don't have a soldering iron handy to connect the TTL cable, but will do that soon (I really need to get my own soldering iron!) Does anyone have any magic tricks or insight as to what might have happened? I unfortunately did not follow the good advice of the DD-WRT forums by performing a 30-30-30 before and after flashing, so maybe that contributed to the sudden failure.

I just flashed my 614L to OpenWRT. Everything went smoothly. My ISP, however, uses 192.168.x.x which conflicted with the newly flashed router. I attempted to change my IP address back to what my ISP had originally setup (10.0.0.1) and applied the changes. I can no longer access the 614L via the web interface.
Router half-bricked, can occasionally start via 30-30-30

Hopefully this isn't out of the scope of help I might recieve here, as I believe this is a hardware level issue. I received this router (WGL614 v8) from a friend, who said it died out on him via power surge. I do some occasional electronics repairs (TVs, component level on pc motherboards, etc), so I figured I'd have a shot at this. After fiddling with it for awhile, I found that running a 30-30-30 reset sometimes allowed it to boot up and run just fine. No problems or quirks to be seen. I went ahead and flashed to the newest NG/stock firmware to see if it'd help, but it did not. It did restart itself after the flash and run fine - it only fails again once power is completely removed. After removing power, it wouldn't start again that day, so it just sat for awhile. I decided today to tinker some more and it started right up via 30-30-30, so I went ahead and tossed DD-WRT onto it via the UI. The flash went fine, and it rebooted to the DD-WRT UI with no issues - good wireless, no problems. I had hoped that maybe the bootloader routines...

When I pluged in to router with cable it didn't assign IP address to attached computer. Can I find somewhere and download *.bin images to use it with flashing using JTAG? Regards, Michal

Having spent awhile reading this forum and the dd-wrt forum I know I am probably screwed, but here's my distress signal: I have a WGR614/L on which I had been running the dd-wrt v24 9281 build successfully for about a year. A couple days ago I thought I might try to upgrade to the latest dd-wrt, having read that the older builds had some known security issues. I used the dd-wrt web interface and Firefox 3.0.6 to upload dd-wrt.v24-11604_WGR614v8_L-mini.bin as instructed by http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation#Netgear_WGR614v8.2FL.2FWW The update page sat there for a minute and then said "update successful". Per the instructions I left the router alone for a few minutes more, and eventually rebooted it. At this point I theorize several possible things could have gone wrong: the image itself could have been bad, the dd-wrt update interface could be buggy, or I could have rebooted it too soon and interrupted the flash programming routine... Anyway, I now have a (nearly) bricked router. It responds to pings on 192.168.1.1, but no web, ssh, telnet, etc. If I yank the power out and plug it back in, the power light is solid green and the 'test' light is solid amber. No flashing If...

Recently my roomate and I have bought the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. If anyone is familier with the game, when you enter the game it will tell you whether or not your NAT type is Strict of Open. Now the issue is that my roomates shows that his is open, while mine shows that it is Strict. Also when I go into my router to see if I can add my port or computer to the Upnp Portmap table, there is no way to do that. Can anyone tell me why his IP address is the only one showing up in the Portmap Table? What can I do to open my NAT type? Does this include Port Forwarding?

I had at DD-WRT build from Jan 09 running and during an attempt to upgrade to the latest bricked it. I am not sure what I did exactly, don't upgrade when tired! Here is what I am able to do. Serial console is working. I am able to CTRL-C and start the tftpd I can ping the router at 192.168.1.1 I can upload using a windows tftp app the images downloaded from this site. The DD-WRT *.chk builds from here don't run, the router always resets. When I flash the original WGR614 image chk image the router seems to start correctly. The DHCP server is running, however, when I try to connect to 192.168.1.1 I am asked for a username and pw. I enter the default from the manual and back label but nothing seems to work. Firefox and IE same behavior. I have done the hard reset several times. I see in the console the loaddefaults! message when I do this. Still not able to log in via the web. I do have the command prompt from the serial console, but not sure what I can do there to help my situation. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi guys, this is my first try with WGR614L and I've managed to brick it!!! I've installed the .chk version of the firmware on the first run, after that tried to install the VPN Generic and it said Upgrade failed! I've tried to install the Standard Generic and - success. But I need the VPN one! I've tried to install it again this time from the Standard firmware but - the same - Upgrade failed. Then I tried to upload the SP1 stable release of the VPN firmware. It did the trick but after it was uploaded it rebooted automaticaly. I waited for almost 20min. but no more signs of life: Check LED orange, ping available, no tftp, power LED on-green, LAN LED on-green I've read about the hard reset method - didn't help. Also doesn't seem to have tftp at the start. Tried it more than 20 times. As I read, the tftp server on the router sits there for 3 seconds right after start, I suppose it is not so hard to catch it. Also I used windows and linux to try but with no success. HELP, PLEEEAASE!

Then I have tried to upgrade to the DD-WRT by using the option "erase all settings". The router bricked. Later I have done an "hard reset" of the router and now when i connect the router to the pc the DHCP is down. With a static ip the router reply to the ping but, I can't access to the router's page at 192.168.1.1 What can I do to restore the firmware? I have tried with the tftp procedure but both modem's led don't blink when I restart the router.

Can't connect to router after executing ./mtd_erase -d linux

I was following along here: http://www.myopenrouter.com/article/10496/How-To-Switch-Firmwares-on-the-NETG... The very last comment as of 21:03 Oct.12 2009 is my problem, it's pasted below: """ tftp> status Connected to 192.168.1.1. Mode: octet Verbose: on Tracing: off Rexmt-interval: 5 seconds, Max-timeout: 25 seconds tftp> put (file) openwrt_wgr614l.chk putting openwrt_wgr614l.chk to 192.168.1.1:openwrt_wgr614l.chk [octet] tftp: sendto: Network is unreachable What's the problem? Also do I need a bin, trx, or chk? If anything other than chk (maybe I'm wrong for even attempting to use this), where can I find the download? """ The program used was the equivalent of tftp available in the repo for the distro I was using at the time. I thought I'd have another go at it tonight, and the new distro provides tftp, however, I am still presented with the network is unreachable error. Maybe I need to change the routing tables? I'll check them and report back the results in a little while.

Hi, first post and i'd just like to say that even though i havent posted before this, ive read around the forums and seen some awesome people and help, so im glad i bought a WGR614L and joined this community! This post is somewhat long so summary: 1. ran erase linux from fully working dd-wrt in ssh 2. tftp'd tomato 1.23 chk build that i got from this site 3. rebooted few seconds after upload completed (seems like this was the mistake i made) 4. router boots into what seems like dd-wrt, but cant login, internet doesnt work, ssid broadcasting same as before 5. got a serial adapter , forgot solder gun, so using hot glue 6. text in putty serial console is not legible 7. Please Help Me!!!! So now to the problem, i bought the WGR614L router 2 days ago, on the first day, i tried using tomato 1.25, but it didnt work due to the wan IP problems, so i decided to go ahead and install dd-wrt instead, it went fine, i installed the initial flash build then upgraded to the newest mini and set everything up.
Slow Wireless Speeds (Both WAN and LAN) on Buffalo WHR-HP-G5

I have a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 with "DD-WRT v24 RC-5 (11/22/07) vpn" firmware... I have two wireless PC's on my network and one wired.. My wired PC gets 10MB down and 1MB up via the Internet.. My two wired PC's get on average 3MB down and 1MB up (sometimes 5mb down, sometimes 1mb down).. I tested file transfer speed via FTP for them and it got 1.9MB via the LAN!! Both Wireless PC's show "excellent" for the connection strength.. I tried upgrading to "DD-WRT v24-SP2 (07/22/09) std" and that didn't fix it either.. I figured I would give Tomato I try to see if that fixes it.. I just downloaded the Tomato firmware and it says if you're running DD-WRT you can upgrade from the web UI.. I select the tomato.trx file but the UI says "Incorrect image file." when I try to update... Don't know what to try now.. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
