DD-WRT and other packages

Hi, Just bought a WGR614L router and got DD-WRT running just fine on it. I noticed that the standard WGR614L DD-WRT firmware available is the 'mini' version, which does not include all the packages I'd like to use -- mainly, I want OpenVPN support. I've been reading through how to use the ipkg utility to install other OpenWRT packages, but after enabling JFFS2 and cleaning the volume, I get "cannot create directory /jffs2/usr: Input/Output Error" when trying to update the packages, even though I have 700k showing as free. Does anyone know how to install OpenWRT packages with ipkg on the WGR614L, or alternately, does anyone know if the newest v24 "VPN" version DD-WRT for Broadcom chipsets will work on this model router? Thanks in advance for any info...

I installed the DD-WRT v24 firmware and it worked great, but somewhere in the process of configuring it I manged to... well, "brick" is a little strong, I'm sure it still boots, but I believe I managed to foul up the network settings enough that I can't access the configuration web page. The button on the back of the WRT614L that resets it with the default Netgear firmware doesn't seem to work with DD-WRT. Is there a trick to it, or does anyone have any other ideas for wresting back control of my router?

"step by step" guide to custom code on the WGR614L

Are there any "step by step" guides to putting custom code on the WGR614L ? I have already downloaded all available stuff for the WGR614L. It would be nice if there was a basic module usage guide. This would greate assist in locating which areas /modules need to be enhanced to add custom features. Also a basic logic flow would be handy. It seems pretty dumb to me to have to spend 100's of hours in try to understand what does what so that I can make a minor change. In my case I want to supply my customer base (200 users) with a modified version of the "netgear orig" code so the rather than block selective sites only allow access to selected sites. I have spent many hours and still can not find out which module handles this processing. Thanks Howard R. Levy

Noticed this thread on DD-WRT forum . Wanted to bring in the discussion here. -Nachi DD-WRT supports the bcm5354 based routers, but not sure if it already supports the netgear WGR614L open source router. Can anyone through some ideas here? WGR614L has community around it at http://www.myopenrouter.com and you may be able to get some answers on this there too. Here is what I can find out about WGR614L at here . "A new router platform WGR614L is coming soon and what got me excited is that this new platform is well suited for many excellent community developed firmwares like like OpenWRT, Sveasoft, DD-WRT, Tomato. This Broadcom 5354 SoC based router has 4MB flash and 16MB SDRAM - good enough to run most of these popular firmwares. In fact most of the firmwares that runs on Linksys WRT54GL should be easily (relatively speaking) portable to WGR614L." DD-WRT supports the bcm5354 chipsets - but not sure if the firmware can be run on this rotuer unmodified. The also have a alpha version of Tomato firmware available here . --wrthack

What could this router possibly do other than it's intended use? What kind of other "programs" would be useful or just-fur-fun for this? One idea: An integrated LAN MONITOR into the router. A program that would graphically show the traffic on the LAN/WAN and be able to log in remotely to see the data? Maybe graphically is asking too much with so little memory.. how about text a text based one? And that can be set to store the data on a local machine. An option for max log size so as to not fill up one's hdd. I'm not a programmer in this language yet.....but I'll get there with LOTS of help. I probably have more interest in it that I should, but I'm going to give it a shot. If one of you guys beat me to the punch....that's okay.

So far, I've used DD-WRT, so it will be nice to try out the other options in detail. Anyone out there using Tomato? How do you like it?

It was suggested that I post my firmware build woes here. So here goes. I can't get 1.0.1_10.17 to build out of the box.
