In case you didn't know, and happen to be an owner of a finely crafted NETGEAR R9000, Kong's got a dynamite DD-WRT build available. This was just updated and is the latest release since 2017-June.

This howto covers setting up an OpenVPN Server for access to your home network as if you were local. It's an excellent alternative to opening a bunch of ports in your firewall and exposing poorly secured programs to the world wide web.

Here's the overview:

  1. install OpenVPN on laptop to generate keys for server and a few clients
  2. configure dd-wrt router
  3. configure clients

Please respond in the Comments what hardware you used this how-to on, and any differences. I will update original article with your input.

New Kong builds are out, folks!

Grab them in the NETGEAR firmware downloads section.

Note:

- *.bin files can only be flashed from dd-wrt webif.
- *.chk can be flashed from Netgear factory fw and from dd-wrt webif

- I don't provide factory to dd-wrt for non Netgear models
  since I do not own any non Netgear Broadcom units

All builds include ddup util, which allows update checking
and flashing of the following models:

Starting out fresh with an open source firmware from a stock NETGEAR router, such as the WNDR3800, WNDR4000, WNDR4500, WNR3500L or WNR3500Lv2 is usually pretty simple; most popular firmwares come with a pre-built (compiled) firmware file that is ready to install. These are in the .CHK file format, and can be uploaded to the router directly through the NETGEAR stock interface--see these instructions for more details.
