After a week or so of hacking the WGR614L, I thought it would be a good idea to share some of the information that I have learned along the way. This is by no means a definitive guide; rather, it is more of a collection of some interesting facts and background about the hardware and the bootloader, as well as providing some assistance with using my improved flash utility for the router.

Recently it seems that quite a few users are using the firmwares published in this site and are very excited to test different versions and varieties of these firmwares.  However, most of the third party firmwares will not accept 'chk' images from their web interface, and the 614L boodloader accepts only ‘chk’ style images.

This article will tell you how to configure your guest SSID with the new MyOpenRouter independent firmware for the WGR614L.  Let's get started!

What is a Guest SSID?

A Guest SSID allows users to assign two SSID's for a single wireless interface. It will behave as if you have two network interfaces. Let's take a real life problem where this feature can be of great value.

Hopefully, you will never have to do this, but if you are like me and like to work on the bleeding edge of technology - sometimes things happen. (Of course, you might just enjoy getting down to the core with your new serial console, too!)

So, you've "bricked" your WGR614L, either through too much tinkering or just a fluke. You may have tried tftp through your network cable, you just can't get a ping or for any reason can't get it going again. Rather than panic, you can access your router by using a serial console!

If you have been just getting into routers, networking and upgrades, you probably have seen a lot of folks talk about pinging.

This should help you understand this utility.

PING is short for Packet InterNet Groper, ping is a utility used to verify if a network data packet is capable of being distributed to an address without errors. The ping utility is commonly used to check for network errors.
