Great to see this release. we were eagerly waiting for this version. Thanks team...
There are two images in the zip - one trx and one chk. which file to use?
If you like to upgrade this image from the default Netgear firmware then use the chk verion.
The reason for that is because to upgrade from a Netgear version of the firmware in WGR614L use the firmware upgrade ui and browse and select dd-wrt.v24-9281_mor_NEWD_SF_mini.chk
If you are upgrading from an already existing version of dd-wrt use
dd-wrt.v24-9281_mor_NEWD_SF_mini.trx for the upgrade
The installation guide is now available as well, and covers installing the firmware either with or without a serial console:
DD-WRT Installation Guide
I have tried with v9. It gets successfully installed on v8...
Will this work on the WGR614 V8 or could someone make a build for it with the standard DD-WRT V24 firmware?
Not sure what you are asking. The V8 is what the download is designed for. I don't believe the standard DD-WRT V24 firmware will fit on the router.
It should just barely fit. Here are some links.

The firmware is about 3.6MB and the router has 4MB of space available for the flash.

It will fit into your flash but you will not be able to boot the router. You need to modify the flash layout and the BSP codes, some nvram values also... so you need to go for the version available here...
So what do I need to do to build it? I have my JTAGed router, Ive got linux, I have all the souce. what do I have to do too compile this puppy?
You need to modify the flash layout, some parts of the flash driver needs to be changed also. I guess, it will be better if you can download the source for wgr614L and then go through it.
