Installing the other variants (standard, VPN) of DD-WRT on the WGR614L

I've been wanting to install DD-WRT(svn11793) on my WGR614L and was doing a lot of reading to make sure i don't do it wrong. The DD-WRT wiki as well as the installation guide here mentions that i need to first flash the router using the .chk variant of DD-WRT. However, the .chk variant is only the mini version of DD-WRT. If i then want to flash the standard version of dd-wrt which is a .bin file, i could simply use the mini versions upgrade page to do so.

The dd-wrt installation wiki says the following :

----------------------------------------------------------
If the
firmware you are loading is before svn11600 then you will need to
update the firmware using this file first before upgrading to a newer
build. After the initial .chk flash (after svn11600) any generic .bin
file can be used to upgrade firmware to the router using the dd-wrt
Firmware update tab.
----------------------------------------------------------

So, i thought all was ok untill i came across a few threads which said that if i tried to flash the .bin version it would brick my router.

So, what is the right thing to do. Should i just install the mini version which is a .chk file and stop or can i then go ahead and install any of the other supported builds which are in .bin format after first flashing with the .chk version.

This is my first time in flashing a router and so i am in a dilemma as to what to do. Would appreciate any help.

After flashing a .chk mini build ...u can go to GUI interface for f/w upgrade and flash a .bin file ....

remember 2 do hard factory reset after every flash .....

Thanks Achilles,

I'll be trying it out this weekend and will post the results here if all goes through fine.
