Brand New Tomato Firmware... what do you think?

Tathagata Das just uploaded a brand new version of the Tomato firmware for WGR614L, built upon the most recent Tomato version and source code:

http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/10948/Tomato-Firmware-for-NETGEAR-W...

Please post your comments and experiences with this firmware!

I tried this - the linked file, http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/10948/Tomato-Firmware-for-NETGEAR-W... downloads a file named Tomato_Firmware.gz.zip.
unzipping that yielded a file named Tomato_Firmware. Gunzipping that yielded a file named Tomato_Firmware, which appears to be the Readme file.

Perhaps you linked to the wrong file? Or I did something wrong?
Please advise; I'm happy to test.

Orv

I downloaded the file again, unzipped it, then gunzipped it.  Checking more closely, I find that I get a readme file named  Tomato_Firmware;  I also get a directory named __MACOSX.  Within that directory, I find a file named ._Tomato_Firmware.gz.  Using the linux file command, I find that it's a " AppleDouble encoded Macintosh file".  Wonder why I don't get the same results as you?

I get the same results as you - a file named Tomato_Firmware with no extension. However, this file is 2,890 KB in size, which looks about right for a firmware image. Should this file be renamed to add the .chk extension? I'm wary of trying this and potentially bricking the router.

Ray,

Ray,

Extract TomatoFirmware.gz.zip so you get TomatoFirmware.gz

Rename TomatoFirmware.gz to TomatoFirmware.tar.gz

WinRAR and most other archive tools are too dumb to detect a file type properly.

OK ... I dnt know y u r

OK ... I dnt know y u r getting this problem ... I did the following things to get it :

unzip Tomato_Firmware.gz.zip
tar -zxvf Tomato_Firmware.gz

These two steps give me the directory Tomato_Firmware which contains the files

README & tomato_wgr614l.chk

Please check using these steps ....

I downloaded from the link

I downloaded from the link again. I got a file named
Tomato_Firmware.gz.zip
I unzipped it and got a directory
__MACOSX/
which contains a file
._Tomato_Firmware.gz
which is a Mac AppleDouble encoded Macintosh file
HOWEVER:
----------------------
The .gz file also contained a file entitled
Tomato_Firmware
It turns OUT, upon inspecting the file with the file command, that it's actually a GNU tar file.

By doing tar xvf Tomato_Firmware
I got the follow files in a directory called Tomato_Firmware:
Tomato_Firmware/README
Tomato_Firmware/tomato_wgr614l.chk

So - the tar file isn't named tar... that's pretty confusing.

OK, I successfully untarred

OK, I successfully untarred the latest version. It has a size of 2949178 bytes and an md5sum of e7b12da14f6b87f2f6c6cc54522195d1. That's different than the released version.

I uploaded it to the router, which reset as expected.

But I wound up still running the old version:

It's like the router rejected the upload. Wonder what's wrong?

Hi, the problem that I was

Hi, the problem that I was going to ask about was the unzipping/untarring that turned out to be the windows rar program...

So, I successfully installed it, and the only issue I got is the wireless site survey - once I press the refresh button the router "hangs" in a way - it starts to lose packets on the local ethernet side and the web GUI is not accessible

Any ideas?

Just to add that the router

Just to add that the router stays in that "hanged" situation until being reset by switching off the power

I have tested it in my computer and it is working fine.
I am using Mozilla as a browser to upgrade the firmware.
If the router rejected the upload it should give some error message. But I don't think you are getting any such messages. How do you come to know that older version is still running ?

Because that's what it says on the About page of the router (see my previous post)  I uploaded it from a Linux box (Fedora) to the router using Firefox 3.0.x (I think), and got no error messages. Very strange..

Hi Tathagata, any clues on my problem?

Not that this is so critical for me, but it would be nice to see the usage of the 2.4GHz spectrum upon installing the router

I successfully uploaded this into my wgr614v8 and it works fine, but I was really interested in the version of tomato that does DSL bonding which i think is 1.21 , but I dont seem to find it. I would love to convert the .trx into the .chk but i tried and still can't do it. but this new firmware rocks, but i am not really interested in this version. if you dont mind helping me locating the .chk version of 1.21 , i would would very much appreciate it.
thanks

I think you must be referring to Tomato/MLPPP, which is a fork of the official Tomato firmware. Here is a link to the "About" page that describes this fork:

http://fixppp.org/index.php?p=about

It looks like the latest stable build of this version is 1.19. Build 1.21 looks to be an alpha version

hey ray, thats correct thats what I need, but i cannot seem to locate a .chk version of this for the netgear router. If you have any leads please notify me.
thanks

I'm afraid I don't personally have the tools and know-how to create a build of the Tomato/MLPPP version from its source code. Maybe someone on this forum can help, or you could appeal to the authors. I didn't see any direct contact information at their "official home" (www.fixppp.org) but they are known to hang out in the DSL Reports forums. Try the following url.

Good luck!

Downloaded and installed the

Downloaded and installed the firmware. Same version that has the mac osx dir and the non-.tar tarball. Immediately on reconnect many of the web-interface things were displaying outside of their fields and causing issues. I reset it and they went to where they were suppose to be. Unfortunately, I need to use this system for work in a couple hours and the wireless kept dropping. I may play more this weekend.

Tathagata, Anyone...

Tathagata, Anyone...

did someone tested the "wireless site survey". It hangs my router!

Everything else is working just fine so far, but the site survey issue is a little worrying, because I'd like to have the option to see the 2.4GHz spectrum and choose the right channel

After reading this thread

After reading this thread about the file renaming about the tarball, it sounds like this was an effort get the firmware out there for use & testing ASAP - which is fine.

However, over on the download page for the latest Tomato version, there's no indication the source code is bundled with it. I added that observation.

http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/discussion/11030/Where-the-source-c...

Please provide the original and modified build source used per the Tomato source license so others make review, modify and build their own.

Thanks, Mark S.
