Dumbest question today: Why did I buy a WGR614L?

After poking around here and elsewhere, I ordered a WGR614L from Amazon to replace a failed WGR614 (v6). I've gotten the general idea that alternative firmware will let me do some cool new things, but honestly I can't find what those cool new things are. I'm sure folks here can reassure me that the extra $15 or so above the regular WGR614 is well worth it. Can someone point me toward some information to help me understand what I'll be able to do that I couldn't before? It must be out there, but I haven't run across any clear explanation of benefits.

The new router will be at an office with a mix of Macs and Windows boxes. I'd enjoy being able to have safe access to those machines from my home network, so VPN or something similar would be of particular interest to me.

Thanks - sorry to be such a newb!

As an add-on to that question

As an add-on to that question - given my newness to the open router arena, which of the firmware options would you recommend? I'd imagine that may be a hot-button question, but I'd appreciate any opinions.

There are a lot of advantages

There are a lot of advantages of using 3rd Party firmwares like ...
1 . U can customize ur f/w according to ur needs like supporting VPN , QoS etc which may not be avlbl in ur default f/w .
2 . Most of these 3rd party firmwares provide option of "Repaeter bridging " which u can use to expand ur wireless network wdout using WDS functionality ...
3 . These firmwares (DD-WRT/OpenWRT) provide support of Virtual interface which u can use to create ur own wireless network ...
4 . Output power can be increased with these firmwares ...

These r a few of the advantages that I can tell u right now ... I will let u know if smthing else strikes my mind or may be someone else on this community may point out some other advantages that I missed ...

Cuming 2 ur second question WGR614L supports 3rd party firmwares like Tomato, OpenWRT and DD-WRT ....
All of them r equally good n u can use any of them ... the builds r also avlbl on this site ...

hope this info will help u ....
