firmware upgrade failed.please check your file

I have flashed a few other types of routers with DDWRT . A few problems here and there, but things that I could figure out and work through.  So I see that netgear is making a router that is designed for tinkering with and decide to buy one. I am on my third day of jus trying to get the initial flash to work.  I have downloaded different variations of .CHK files and still get firmware upgrade failed. please check your file. I have done the 30-30-30 reset. downloaded the firmware from different sources, from different computers both windows and ubuntu to make sure that  the file was not being corrupted during downloading and still get the same error.  This is a Netgear WGR614L Open-source Wireless G Router V9. Is ther anything else I should try short of breaking out the soldering gun?

I was just reading about the possibility of the router I bought not being the one that I wanted. The Box says WGR614L Open-Source Wireless-G Router that is on a purple label with this sites web address. on the bottom of the router it says that it is a WGR614 V9.... did they just leave the L off or is this possibly a mis-labeled box? When you log into the control panel it does mention that it is a WRG614 V9 but no other specs such as memory or processor speed. Is their some test that I can run to verify if I have the correct router?

My email to a representative

My email to a representative of Netgear who has been helpful with this problem in the past.

Dear Mr.Som Pal Choudhury

I purchased a Netgear WGR 614L, but  received a WGR 614 v9 that was in a WGR 614L box. I noticed this after having difficulty attempting to flash the firmware and was unable to. I have attached a photograph of box and router.  I read  on the myopensource.com forum that this has been a problem and that you have been helpful. I would appreciate any help in getting the WGR 614L router that I need for the school that I am working for.
                                         Thanks,
                                    Tim Harmon

You can check its flash size

You can check its flash size ... if it's 2MB it is a WGR614v9 board and you can't flash any of the 3rd party firmwares onto it bcoz they need 4MB flash ...
If you find that your flash size is 4MB then it's a WGR614L and flashing 3rd party f/ws should not be a problem ...
Let us know what is your flash size ............

The error when flashing led

The error when flashing led me to believe that there was insufficient "flash size". The router has an ID sticker on the bottom that identifies it as a WGR614 v9. How do you test for flash size?

You can also tell a wgr614L

You can also tell a wgr614L (v8) from a v9 by looking at the Netgear installed firmware version. For the L, firmwares are 1.1.x, and for v9, firmwares are 1.2.x (and 1.0.x) . Checking the labels and files on the enclosed CD-ROM can provide additional clues.

The L version tends to be more costly here than the v9. If you should have received the L instead of v9, my advice would be to get the not as described item exchanged for the right one.

Adding serial number info: For v9 s/n prefix 1SV, and L (v8) 1MF, and I believe I've also seen 1W for v8.

I fixed my image link. I am hoping that Netgear will replace this for me. Thanks for the info retro98, as you can see the the serial number has the "1SV" prefix and plainly says that it is a V9 on the bottom

Just wondering, does the

Just wondering, does the serial number printed on your box match what's on your v9 unit?

Take a read at http://www.myopenrouter.com/forum/thread/10311/WGR614L-really-a-WG614v9/
You're not the only one that ran into this. The wgr614L and wgr614 v8 are the equivalents. v9 is definitely the wrong unit.

Did you check if your box matches the router? Did you contact Netgear about receiving the wrong (and cheaper) unit? If so, then please let the rest of us know.

As for Linksys, their WRT54GL is the open source router, which is a particular version of a WRT54G.  So the situation isn't much different then Netgear. Well, I bought one WRT54GL too and it bricked hard (completely unrecoverable without disassembling the unit) after 1st flash, using a firmware image previously verified to work on another GL unit. So guess what I did next? (ans: buy a Netgear)

Box matches the router,

Box matches the router, contacted netgear they confirm that they sent wrong router and advise that I return to vendor, this is not the vendor's fault why waste anyone's time with a company that cannot put oranges in the orange box and apples in the apple box. When you buy a Linksys WRT54GL you always get a WRT54GL, a very basic and desirable quality in a product. I now have two of these Netgear mis-identified toads...I wonder what other quality problems there can be with this sort of sloppyness.

I would advise returning the items to your vendor then (it would help the rest of us shoppers to know who the vendor is), if possible. That vendor probably has a large lot of wgr614Ls that need to be sent back to Netgear anyway. As far as I know, this was last year's problem, and someone retained a stash of very old stock. If the vendor refuses the return, then you should engage Netgear again.

Since you mention the box matches the router, you and/or the vendor can inspect the serial number printed on the box to determine whether you'll receive a true GL.

Btw, the wgr614L unit I purchased from buy.com around 1Q09 was correct (S/N prefix 1MF).

V9 routers wrongly labeled as

V9 routers wrongly labeled as Open Source Router are as old as the 614L itself. I don't know whether this one is from an old stock or whether Netgear has made this mistake again.

Luckily I've got2 real WGR614L and I hope I'll have the same luck when the WNR3500L is available.
