Disappearing folder and files from the connected usb hard drive

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem, I couldn't find actually any complaints on that. I plugged my 160GB USB hard drive and was using it as a network share. When copying some larger files I noticed that some content just disappeared. They are empty folder even if there were files copied before. When I restarted router, some files appeared again but other folders and files disappeared. When I plugged that USB drive to PC, I have done many tests and nothing was lost, so I assume this must be something with a router. I have the original firmware from Netgear.

Regards,

Sigman

I use SATA 160GB 2.5'' hard

I use SATA 160GB 2.5'' hard drive with the USB case like this: http://insidecomputer.stores.yahoo.net/2usb20alhadr.html

File system is NTFS. Number of shares or read/write access doesn't matter to reproduce the issue. Issue happens when I copy large files around 1GB (like movies or cd images) through wireless (network share). When copy is finished and I browse the share, I notice that some folders disappear, some folders are still there and some are empty even if they contained subfolders and files. These folders that had content before but it got lost, can’t be open anymore. From Netgear interface they look like just empty folders. When I disconnect that drive and plug it directly to PC, I get the same structure as when the drive is connected to the router – some folder are there, some became empty, some got lost. It looks like this is a problem with file allocation table? When scanning the drive from Windows with scan disk, it recovers some folders.

I formatted the drive from PC couple of times but was always able to reproduce the problem. When drive is connected to the PC, this never happens, nothing disappears.

I have checked the compatibility list http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12207/kw/dd-wrt%20usb/r_id... and my drive is not there.

I wonder if changing firmware to dd-wrt would fix the problem or this is rather hardware related?

After upgrading the official

After upgrading the official firmware to the latest version V1.0.2.50_31.1.25 I again faced that problem. I was uploading files via FTP from my work and all files just disappeared. Before I used USB hard drive and I thought maybe the drive is incompatible or something but then I started to use a standard old USB Flash Drive (1GB Corsair) and same thing happened. Also I noticed that if I copy larger files via windows network, copying process hangs sometimes and PC is being disconnected. ipconfig/release and /renew won't connect PC back.
I'm going to try dd-wrt, if this won't help then I'm going to replace the router as if nobody else have that problem - this has to be a hardware fault...

I have tested the same stock

I have tested the same stock firmware you are using for a week now with intensive read/write, but I have no problems with it. I have a rather dated iomega external hdd.

I've seen this problem with

I've seen this problem with another device that I have that is also a linux with NTFS for external USB drives. The problem initially occurred when I was disconnecting the hard drive from that device without "safely" shutting it down. Once the corruption started, I kept seeing files and folders disappear. What I did was plugged the NTFS drive into a windows system and did a command:
chkdsk /x f:
(F: was the USB drive letter as identified by windows). This corrected the problem for me and taught me the importance of always using the "Safely remove hardware" function on the computer. The default firmware for the router also has that option when you log into it.

Ultimately I formatted my drive for EXT3 so I could get more functionality out of it. Again, let me emphasize that this was with a different linux device, not this router. I'm just posting this information in case it helps.

Just wanted to say that my problem is solved. After weeks of dealing with Netgear support I have got the product replacement so it seems that it was a hardware problem.

Cheers,
