So I just picked up a 3500L and was looking into adding external antennas. I found the old thread with an ebay link selling a kit. I emailed the seller and he told me the connectors on the pc board is not the same and the u.fl pig tail will not work.
So what type is it? it looks slightly taller and bigger in diameter than the Linksys WRT320N that I also opened.

thanks for the quick reply. I already saw that thread as well as the one on myopenrouter.com. I actually tried physically installing the u.fl pig tail from a Linksys router onto the on-board connector pictured, it didn't seem to fit. Then again, I didn't press very hard. I'll try again later today.

I have to take another look but it doesn't look like a u.fl. I'm considering just soldering a bare pigtail to it.
from the picture, the connector on the wnr3500l board looks like the solder points are on the corners where the u.fl spec states the solder points are on the side.
it might be easier going the soldering route.
They are NOT u.fl. I purchased the antenna kits from ebay and they do not fit. I had to solder the bare pigtail to the board.

thanks for the pics! That's what I plan on doing. the only question left is antenna. I found some antennas on ebay and they only list "b/g" in description. I emailed the seller asking if these will work with "N".

I'm still waiting for my kit, but isn't one of the wires connected to the center pin, and the other to the outer part that the antenna screws on to?

well, as far as I can tell no one seems to know what type of contact the connector is. My co-worker thought it was a mini-smp, but I can't seem to find anyone that sells a pre-wired pig-tail.
Anyway, I'm gonna solder the wires like the picture. I believe what you're seeing is the co-axial shield soldered to the outside of the connector. the actual conductor is soldered to the a point somewhere along the circuit.

May I ask what kit you bought? I can find any antenna greater than 9db that has wireless n listed in the description.

Here is the antenna kit I bought. They are 7db antennas and the router they are for is a Wireless N Netgear. I'm not trying to boost the signal too much so I don't think I'll need anything more powerful that these.

The shielding is soldered to the outside of the connector and the center conductor is pushed through the pin hole next to the connector and soldered on the other side of the board.
These are Murata MM8430-2610 connectors.

The Murata MM8430-2610 mates to MXGS83RK3000 or MXGS83RJ3000. The MM8430-2610 are designed for making measurements and not as antenna connectors.

Personally, I don't think it's worth the time nor the effort to try find a cable or pigtail for this. Soldering seems like the best route. Get some SMA with bare leads and you're good to go.

Yeah, that's the way I went, too. I ordered three U.FL to R-SMA adapters, just to find out, that the U.FL cables were really hard to push on those connectors (but I really managed that by pushing hard enough ;) but later on, I came to the conclusion, that the inner wire doesn't make contact to the board at all, and thus the connector must be wrong.
So I took my pliers and carefully removed the three connectors from the board, (so I have easier access to the soldering spots), and soldered these wires to the board like VoodooDaddy. Now, having attached three 5dbi-omnidirectionial antennas, signal really is better, but not too much.
I am using the latest tomato-firmware with the router and I think that fiddling with the mW-parameter virtually does nothing to the wifi-range, can anybody copy this?

I'm using three 12db antennas on my WNR3500L, they're working perfect, because I've a big livingroom, for small rooms, you'll need antennas with less boost, some specialists commend antennas with 5-7db for such routers/accesspoints.
I've bought all the stuff at rf-supplier.com
I ordered the antennas and then three pigtails, but the ready-for-use Ufl-to-RP.SMA pigtails won't fit, you've to sold them onto the PCB and you have to cut the old connections to the orig. Panel-antennas on the PCB.

You have forgetten to either:
1) Removed the Murata connectors with a pair of pliers cafeful.
This with cut the signal from bridging to the built in antenna on
the edge.
or
Best and fast way is:
2) Drill a small hole to cut the pcb track reaching to the antenna on
the edge. You should cut the tracks any point along the tracks after
the Murata connectors leading to the PCB antennae(at the edge)
If not, the RF signals are flowing out from your external
RP-SMA antennae and internal antennae on the PCB.

Ok, I might miss this photo shown on flickr.
I have done the right thing by cutting the tracks on both left and right sides,
but, I don't see you have cut the track for the middle one, have you?
Also, the tracks are cut, but I don't you have cut it right through the
track until you can see a hole. But then, you have measured the resistance,
if your multimeter is showing open circuit, then you are ok. You should get
open circuit reading on you multimeter measuring across the capacitor and
the murata connector's signal point.
My method is to drill a small hole on the track that is at the edge/boundry
line where it stretches out to meet the square PCB antenna.
Can you see two capacitors, one is before the murata connector and the
other is after the connector. I am not sure whether the pigtail centre core
should be soldered on the capacitor that is after the murata connector?
Anyway, now that you have modified your router's metamaterial antenna,
did you get a better signal range when router is using external antennae?
