It says to file must contain cnk or bin when I cahnge it is says file has invalid header
Did you try using a DD-WRT BIN firmware file?
I don't blame you for going back to the original Netgear firmware.
You think you need parental control:-)
Parental Control using OpenDNS is nothing but a placebo. It's DNS based which is nonsense. For example you want to surf to a site that is not allowed by OpenDNS, all you have to is use a proxy, for example: http://www.zend2.com/
I bet it takes longer to setup opendns than for your kids to find a way around it.
The only thing that really helps is either content filtering or block everything and then have a whitelist with sites they are allowed to surf.
Or the method I would prefer is to setup a transparent proxy and tell them, that you will check from time to time which urls the called:-)
OpenDNS is an excellent parental control solution. You just need to sign up for an account and configure your router's DNS settings. You can then select the different levels of protection you want. The filtering will apply to everything behind your public IP address.
The Netgear/openDNS parental controls are the exact same thing with one difference. The filtering and settings are based on your router's MAC address and not the public IP address. With a standard OpenDNS account all settings apply to everyone behind your IP address.
The Netgear solution works perfectly for me because computers behind my ISP's IP address are in a private network. If I make changes using the standard OpenDNS,they will apply to everyone behind my ISP's public IP address. I tried that once and got a lot of hate mail from some of my ISP's customers.
Using the Netgear/OpenDNS parental controls, the settings only apply to my private network. I use the factory firmware on the main WNDR3700 router for that reason and Tomato on the WNR3500L configured as a switch/access point. I haven't found a better parental control solution for my setup.
The individual access control rules in tomato are great, and if you then subscribe to OpenDNS you should be able to accomplish everything you are looking for.
OpenDNS maintains their own database and it is all on the web. You will just need to change the DNS server IP address in the router. The instructions are on their website. Since your situation is different from mine, it should work with any router or firmware.
Once you sign up for the free acount, you will see a screen with different levels of protection None to High (I have mine on Moderate) Some of the categories include Porn, Violence, Gambling, etc. You can customize to block or allow some categories.
It is a simple thing to try. Just write down your current DNS settings so you can go back if you don't like it. They also have a paid account but I have not seen a need for it.
IMHO this is a great service. The only reason I bought another Netgear is because of how the OpenDNS parental controls work for my situation.
Try it on the Linksys. There's no software to install.

Anyone? I too would like to know an easy method to revert from Tomato to the stock firmware.
Have you tried a different browser? When I was installing Tomato from DD-WRT it would not work in Firefox I had to use Internet Explorer.
Also, try flashing back to DD-WRT and then flash the original Netgear firmware in DD-WRT.
Will the checksum error also occur if downgrading from Tomato 1.27 to 1.25?
This is what I did going from tomato 9047 to Netgear 1.0.2.50. After a 30-30-30, I simply upgraded to Netgear 1.0.2.50 in chk format. It took, but the power light keeps blinking.
At this point, I power cycled (30 sec), did 30-30-30, and then tftp'd to 192.168.1.1 [ tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put filename]
Wait 5 minutes, power cycle, 30-30-30...VOILA.
IN MY EXPERIENCE, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU SET A STATIC IP ON YOUR PC WHEN PLAYING AROUND WITH ROUTER FIRMWARE UPGRADES!!
Taekwon3dan's procedure worked for me. I upgraded to the Netgear firmware from Tomato GUI then followed up with tftp while the power light was blinking green. Working fine.
hello,
have got a new 3500L and installed "tomato-K26USB-1.28.9049MIPSR2-beta19-vpn3" whitout any problem (via dd-wrt mini before).
I would like to test this method to revert NetGear firmware, seems realy simple.
Do you think i can use these method in my case 9049 ??
Thank's for reply.
Aloha from France.
Tathagata Das,
Have you been able to test the Tomato 1.27 firmware upgrade? If not, has anyone tried to revert back to Netgear firmware from Tomato 1.28 by adding the .chk file to the upgrade field?
well i think there is really no problem using this way :

Yes, I have done this numerous times from 1.27 and 1.28 including the latest build 50.
You can also skip the power cycle and 30-30-30 after the power blinks continuously (i.e., after you flash from the tomato gui). You can tftp directly after the tomato gui flashing step.
I think the tomato gui flashing step puts the router in recovery mode whereby you can then tftp the Netgear stock firmware.
This procedure also works on WNR3500V2.
Go ahead...don't be afraid.
I can cofirm this works and you can skip the 30-30-30 reset once the power light blinks green.
In build 52 it seems that Teddy has included flashing compatibility with OEM Netgear firmware ?
Flashed my WNR3500L to tomato-K26USB-1.28.9052MIPSR2-beta23-Ext. Decided to go back to original firmware from cd. WNR3500L.chk, not sure of exact verion but dated 2/3/2010. So, I did a 30-30-30 first, used the GUI in tomato to load the stock firmware. Ended up not needing to use tftp after the GUI upgrade, it was good to go after another 30-30-30.
Good to read that! It will encourage people to try alternative firmware, if reverting becomes easy.
I have been unable to revert back to stock firmware. When I FTP to the box, it does not recognize the erase linux command ( and I dont get the ascii graphic ) When I load the Stock firmware from the Upgrade GUI it says it completes, reboots, then comes right back up to tomato.
Tomato Firmware v1.28.9054 MIPSR2-beta K26 USB Ext
Any help would be appreciated

You certainly don't have to erase linux, it could brick your router. Just select the Netgear firmware in the upgrade section, click on "After flashing, erase all data in NVRAM memory", and perhaps a hard reset of the router after...
Never done this but andyst4545 managed to do it so it must be possible...
Yeah I tired that, it would NEVER go back to the Netgear firmware. although it alwasy said complete, I would bring the router back up and it was on the Tomato congig screen.
My final solution after netgear said they woudl not help becasue I had loaded a different firmware to their router was this....
I started uploading a different version of tomoato to my router. about 30 seconds in I pulled the power chord on my router ( Oh NO! ) Waited abotu 5 minutes, powered it back up and low and behold, I had a fault - flashing power light. I ran the Firmware recovery software from Netgear and Tada! back to stock firmware. the problem is the firmware recovery will only work if your router is hosed and has a blinking power light.
