Does anyone of you know why DDWRT has a better WiFi coverage of Tomato?

Yes. DD-WRT have an agreement

Yes. DD-WRT have an agreement with some of the router manufacturers and/or Broadcom. They reputedly have the source code for some of the wireless drivers, and may have been able to override some of the internal limits.

I never heard anyone claim

I never heard anyone claim higher throughput with DD-WRT. Only better strength.

I should mention here - turning off Interference Mitigation in Advanced/Wireless page usually helps a lot. In my releases I disabled all of the unnecessary bells and whistles, [most of them don't do anything useful and degrade performance].

Anyway coverage on DD WRT is definitely better than the tomato.
Too Bad :(
