I'm copying a bunch of stuff from a USB drive over to my NAS. Since my NAS did not recognize my drive, I did the next best thing. I plugged it into my router which sees the drive just fine. I'm using SCP now to do all the copying but I would really rather use rsync. But that's not installed on the router.

 

I can't seem to find decent instructions on how I install rsync. Do I need to compile it? If so, wouldn't I be missing gcc or something like that? I've also seen mention of Optware - is this like apt, yum, rpm, etc. ?  Seems like too much work to install that when all I want is rsync.

ok trying just to go through install per instructions, on ./configure I get error saying I need to specify system type. not sure what I should input here.

You can get the tomatousb

You can get the tomatousb source from the GIT repo. You don't say which flavor you are running, but most (if not all) should be available there too.

Once you have the source on your computer there's readme files for how to compile, it's not too terribly difficult.

Or, as you said, Optware is probably the easiest... Here's the basic guide to get it installed:
