It's been a while since I have been able to look at this problem, and I've decided to stick with the OEM for now. Also, I don't have a serial port so I don't have a simple method of getting the boot log as requested.

I ordered WNR3500L-v1, but JR shipped me a WNR3500L-v2. It looks like they don't have anymore WNR3500L-v1. Anyone would like to exchange WNR3500L-v2 from me. I will pay shipment. I like WNR3500L-v1 better.

I'm new to Netgear routers. I assumed that since there was no version number the default was one. It was hard to find verification. Thank You for posting a clear answer.
My WNR3500L router is exactly as shown in picture posted by dolo724.
It has label N300 WNR3500U/WNR3500L
according to netgear support site, it is WNR3500L v1, but the last post above by dolo724 says it is a v2?
so should I use WNR3500L v1 or v2 firmware on this unit?
or will there be any harm if I try v2 first then v1?
FWIW, I bought it back in 2012 from Amazon and it was sold as a WNR3500L v2. That's why I am confused/not sure if this is really a v1 or v2.
I think dolo724 initially assumed it is a v1 but the last post says it is a v2.
Based on latest firmware available from netgear support site, my firmware version number matches the latest firmware for v1. My router UI is not the Genie, so I'm thinking more this is a v1.
I'm looking at the device status as reported by Tomato, it gives v2 as I said above. BUT I wasn't sure until I loaded the package. Here are the specifics, in case you need the reference for a package choice. Have fun! (just do it...)
Tomato Firmware v1.28.9054 MIPSR2-beta K26 USB Ext USB support integration and GUI, Linux kernel 2.6.22.19 and Broadcom Wireless Driver 5.10.147.0 updates, support for additional router models and Wireless-N mode. Interesting, I have been using the Toasman RT ( for WNR3500Lv1 )
But my system info on the status page tells me:
Model Netgear WNR3500L/U/v2
So I have a v2?
I have this router since at least 05/2011 ( Since that is the date stamp on my oldest firmware download ddwrt switched to Tomato after finding that the wan speed on ddwrt did not perform to my desires )
So is it even possible for me to have a v2? ( I believe v2 did not come out untill 02/2012 )
I assume is it just an error on Toastmans side, have done so for a while and since it works.
Why fix it, does the v2 firmware give me more performance? or other advantages.

As Tathagata said, I only found WNR3500L at the front side, so now I can confirm my router is version V1, thanks to Tathagata.
And I think this kind of topic should be set to top, for I found serveral newbee like me ask this question. So it should set to top or wirte in FAQ.
Thanks.
Good to know that you are able to recognise your router.
Hope, the following two pictures will provide more information to the newbee,
WNR3500L :-
WNR3500Lv2 :-
Anyone know if Amazon is shipping v1 or v2 of the WNR3500L now?
Alas, not necessarily. Ordered yesterday, arrived today and it's a v1. Not a big deal, I suppose it will do just fine.

Thanks!
Can you please post some picture of your router so that I can have clear idea about the model ??
Here's a poor-quality photo:
Merely viewing this picture I guess it is wnr3500Lv1. Can you please give a snapshot of your router's boot-log ??
did you get an answer to this?
No.

This is working for me

Thanks!
I'll give this a shot later and post back here with success. If I have problems, I'll start a new thread.
And to answer an earlier question, I do have the wnr3500L v1.
Thank you so much!
See this article ... it contains more compact information.

Success! Turns out I have WNR3500L/U/v2, so I used Tomato v. 1.28. The process was easy and is well documented on this site. Thanks to all.

Thanks, got the firmware. I'll give it a try this weekend.
Do you need to load dd-rt firmware before loading tomato firmware?
Or did you just renamed the tomato trx file to chk and uploaded directly on netgear firmware update page?
