Kong r21395 Wrong WAN IP

I just flashed Kong's r21395 DD-WRT onto my Linksys E3000 router and finished configuring it but am having an issue with the WAN IP.

Part of my configuration was to setup OpenVPN which is now up and running.  However DD-WRT doesn't realize that I have a new public IP address.  It believes that the router is still using the IP address provided by my ISP.

Ultimately the problem is that I cannot use DDNS because the DD-WRT DDNS service is updating DNSOmatic with the wrong WAN IP.

How can I rectify this?

Thanks,

MJ

You can't. What you describe

You can't. What you describe is normal in my experience. Your router is still connected to your ISP and is routing packets via that IP. OpenVPN is strictly a secure tunnel to another endpoint, via who knows how many other IP hops, to a public facing IP on your VPN providers server.

I run Tomato with a VPN. In Tomato, I can select DDNS with "Use External IP Checker," which will set the public facing VPN IP in the DDNS service provider (NO-IP.com ??) to point to your VPN providers public endpoint. You, of course, will still need to connect to that IP using OpenVPN client to get back into your router/network from outside.

Hope this helps.

Rick - I really appreciate

Rick - I really appreciate your answer. Thank you very much. I went ahead and changed the "Use External IP Checker" option in DD-WWRT prior to reading your post but didn't see the change until after I posted. My DYNDNS account is updated but OpenDNS is having issues . . . hopefully their support can help me out.

Otherwise, you touched on the question I was about to ask regarding how I can connect back to my home network using my DDNS address. I get that my public facing IP address is a result of the VPN connection I made. What I can't figure out is how to use the OpenVPN client to get to my home network. I setup OpenVPN client in DD-WRT. Am I going to need to setup an OpenVPN server in DD-WRT to be able to connect to my home network now?

Thanks,

MJ

Even a blind squirrel can

Even a blind squirrel can find a nut now and then, my friend.

You and I are now in exactly the same boat. I use a VPN service for different reasons and do not connect to my network from remote. I have tried (unsuccessfully) out of curiosity.

I think your VPN provider would be of more help. I suspect you'll need a compatible OpenVPN client running on your Remote host in order to connect to their Server at the forward facing IP that your DDNS now sees.

I haven't gotten past it yet, so I can't offer any practical direction. Sorry. Hopefully some who's smarter than me can step in and straighten us both out. I keep watching the thread.

Good Luck MJ.

Thanks again for the help

Thanks again for the help Rick. The idea of having to initiate a VPN connection from my computer at work just to connect to my home computer was enough for me to disable OpenVPN on the router.

I'm going back to using the Windows client from my VPN provider. I deal with complicated network/infrastructure designs all day - my home stuff needs to be super simple so I don't spend all my free time troubleshooting ;)
