R7000 firmware recommendation - Stable and fast VPN?

Hello,

I've read many posts regarding the R7000 and DD-WRT (Kong) or Tomato (Shibby).  Both sound like fantastic upgrades and both have their dedicated followers etc.  But, its very difficult as a newbie to really decide which would be preferable.

I am looking to use the R7000 in a Dual Rooter setup.  I have a cable connection with 100Mbps download speed.  My existing router will provide standard (non VPN) connection, the R7000 will provide a VPN connection (I'm using PIA, but may change if performance is poor).  The R7000 will be connected to my Gigabit LAN (so, cable connected to the existing router).  The devices that I connect to the R7000 will be mostly connected by wired LAN too (again, all gigabit).  The WiFi will be used but top WiFi performance is less important than stability and VPN speed.

Given the set-up can anybody recommend between DD-WRT or Tomato for solid VPN use?  And, then is there a specific version of DD-WRT or Tomato to look at for stability?

Many thanks for any advice / guidance that can be offered.

I'm using Kongs DD-WRT on my R7000 with no problems at all. I have my VPN traffic routed thru the firewall using rules, and all other traffic is on the super highway.

You might be a little over cautious here and I understand it is a little unnerving moving from standard firmware to non-standarrd, but it's very easy and quick, if done right. Make SURE you follow all the reules when installing and when updating afterwards.

Thank you mesteele, much

Thank you mesteele, much appreciated.

I was moving towards Kongs DD-WRT, mostly because it is referenced in the Private Internet Access (PIA) site.

Is there any particular version of Kongs DD-WRT, or just the latest one?  Which is this one I guess:

Just regarding Rules - do you know if it is possible to set up a rule where local connections within my private network (thus, certain 192.168.x.x IPs ) bypass the VPN altogether?  So, in effect only external traffic goes through the VPN?

Thanks again.

Always get the latest

Always get the latest firmware here:

KONG

BrainSlayers

With the latest Kong make SURE to restore the factory defaults first, and then select After flashing, restore default settings when flashing the firmware.
