Firmware Availability for Netgear Nighthawk R7100LG
Dear all,

I'm user of a Netgear R7100LG (LTE... !) Very good product, but the stock firmware is limited.
I'm looking for an open firmware version (Tomato, DD-WRT, OpenWRT, other?...) for this router.

Did any of you ever saw that ?
Thanks by advance :)

Hi,

Hi,

I am also very interested in an open firmware. The stock firmware has a lot of issues, some services do not work (e.g. SMTP, some websites) and it's losing mobile connection very often.

Still nothing no news...

I'm really disappointed with the product. WTF !! 350 € !!! I have another router in backup, a low-end trick at 100€. It has exactly the same functions :(

I've also a lot of problems with R7100LG fw 1.0.0.32 - did a downgrade t0 1.0.0.30 :-(

Is there any news about a dd wrt firmware?  I've wrote a mail to the professional service for development. Is there anyone intressed in a dd-wrt fw for r7100lg?

Hello,

Hello,

Is there any open firmware for R7100LG ?

The product box advertises OpenWRT however the closest firware I found is for R7000 which is essentially the same model without the LTE module.

Is R7100LG on the roadmap?

Thanls.

DG

Hi,

Hi,

I'm also very interested in open firmware for R7100LG. The stock firmware is horrible, basically the device is unusable. So I'm open to try any open firmware!

Thanks!

I bought it (R7100LG) in July

I bought it (R7100LG) in July then i realised that LTE doesnt work properly, It works around 20 minuts pretty well but then router loose the connection and the only one way to connect it agait is reboot it. So i applied for support because 90days of suport service was offered for free. During my negotiation with tech. specialist i had known that company had already know about this problem and according tech specialist, there is no reason to wait fix the bug because company is going to phase out this product. He sad that 4G doesnt work on this device at all (they have issues with most of the buyers of this router)  and i can use 3G connection which is more stable, what was right. 3G connection keeps around 22 hours, and it doesnt reconect to the network and user should reboot router manually as i saw with 4Gconnection.  So this tech. specialist said me following i can offer you waranty exchange, he understand that is not solve my problem. I asked may i pay addititonal money and change this devise on something else but company offered me only the same model of router.  I thought its might be wrong device and decided for exchange, so yesterday i got my absolutely new router and it works in same way. sadIt loose 3G, 4G connection. What is interesting my free support is finnished already even most of 90 days my router traveling trought Europe couse i sent it to their wharehouse in London.

That's my poorest  expirience with NETGEAR, despite of the fact that this router 2 times expensive (~320 Euro) than ASUS. I hope this review will help you if you will consider to buy NETGEAR and their products.

Thanks Max for your post. I

Thanks Max for your post. I have the exact same problem as you. If they won't be able to fix it through official firmware, I'll try to fix it myself starting from the R7000 open firmware. I had a look and the 4G modem is internally connected through USB bus and I noticed that when the issue happens, the modem doesn't respond at all (it's like stuck in some state). So this is very likely a modem driver issue. Not sure about the chipset used for LTE modem, this is what I'll investigate next. Hopefully we can come up with a functional open firmware that works with the embedded LTE router.

HI all,

HI all,

- About custom FW:

Looking forward to an open FW, which in my country is even advertised on the product boxing...
Robyberto, do you know if the R7000 fw works fine on R7100LG? I would try but I m afraid to brick the router. Off course even if it works I am aware that the custom fw will not manage the LTE connectivity at all. I would just like to know if it is possible to repurpose the R7100LG as a custom FW R7000.

- About stock FW issues (separate topics that we should all post on Netgear community to get as much attention and priorization as possible IMHO):

R7100LG LTE issues clearly impact hard users like me that have LTE as sole WAN source. Netgear engineering says it is working on a new firmware to address that. I tested an alpha version with access to debug mode. That didn'tsolve my issue but I have to say Netgear support has been quite understanding and responsive in my case.

"R7100LG" finally made it as a model in the drop down list when you create a new discussion. Please post your issues on community.netgear.com and ask to test the new beta firmware. Note you can post on the community beyond the 90 day dedicated support period.

My thread below, please respond to it or create a new thread...

To be honest I haven't tried

To be honest I haven't tried to load a R7000 FW onto the R7100LG, since I've opened a case with Netgear to investigate my case.

If no solution is found, then I'll take the risk, since anyway I have a useless device for now (my primary connectivity is through LTE).

I don't see way it should not work since the R7100 is exactly the same from HW point of view as the R7000, and they only added an LTE modem which is internally connected through a USB bus. I believe the chipset for the modem is Sierra.

I'll keep you posted :).
